really really annoys me that we are linked with a bid for rangers goalie mcgregor 5 mill. +......hope theres nothing in it! Why would we spend money on that when we have given, harper and krul?

krul is still too young.....maybe we wanna use given in a swap deal? i really really like us to keep given...but again if he cant stay fit (not getting younger) maybe we should sell now? though call....but would prefer to keep harper, given and krul for a few years more...given and harper seems to work well together, both good goalies and krul should go away on loan for a couple of seasons.

we should use money and energy in other departments in this difficult window!

Tbf Bent has shown he can score goals and work in this league, as you say though pre-season does mean fuck all.

Geremi was being talked up as our creative midfielder this time last year.

Kevin Keegan puts Coloccini on red alert

Aug 11 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

Fabricio Coloccini

KEVIN KEEGAN is waiting for the green light to say Newcastle United have signed Argentinian defender Fabricio Coloccini in a near £10m switch from Deportivo La Coruna.

Once the United boss gets it, he will put Coloccini on red alert for Sunday’s Premier League opener with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Pictures of club owner Mike Ashley sporting United’s purple away shirt with Coloccini’s name emblazoned on the back were beamed around the world from Saturday’s friendly with Valencia at St James’s Park.

Coloccini sat just along the row from the club’s top brass but, even though the Chronicle reported United’s interest in the Argentinian international on Saturday, July 26, there has been no official confirmation he has signed.

The 26-year-old has been on Tyneside since Friday and has already had one training session with the players he hopes will be his new colleagues.

With the season’s opener at Old Trafford now just six days away, Keegan is naturally desperate to see the deal finally wrapped up.

When I asked the United manager today if Coloccini would be handed a potential baptism of fire at Old Trafford he did not hesitate in telling me: “Yes – if his fitness levels are right. We will watch how quickly he integrates this week.

“His team has been in South America playing the games we played 10 days ago, but he looks very fit. We will wait and see.”

Deportivo are in Venezuela but, because of his impending transfer to United, Coloccini stayed behind and has been training with the club’s youth players before heading for Tyneside.

If for any reason Coloccini does not face up to his Argentinian colleague Carlos Tevez in Manchester, Keegan is likely to opt for a central defensive pairing of Steven Taylor and Claudio Cacapa.

They have started all six of United’s friendlies in the absence of Abdoulaye Faye, who reported back from the summer break with an injury and is yet to return to full training.

Meanwhile, if Keegan is looking anxiously at the Coloccini situation he has every right to wonder whether United are going to receive the paperwork which would allow Jonas Gutierrez to play at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Gutierrez did not leave Real Mallorca on the best of terms, and the La Liga outfit are dragging their heels in releasing his paperwork.

However, on a more positive note, Keegan claimed on Saturday that he hopes to make a couple more signings before Sunday.

He does have a Portuguese left-back on trial from Boavista, whose agent is the Gateshead-based Frank McAvennie, and this is a position he has been wanting to strengthen all summer.

Keegan joked on Saturday night that, while Gutierrez speaks fluent English, his next signing cannot speak any English at all.

I know he's just another wannabee ITK, but Big Willie on NufcBlog is saying that a major signing will be unveiled along with Coloccini tommorow. He's been right in the past, but wrong on one or two things.

I know it's probably bollocks, but it's much more interesting than naming celebrities with dreadlocks.

Also, he reckons a deal for Derdiyok is agreed and will be completed once Smith leaves, which he claims is happening soon.

Really want him to be right but we all know he is wrong
