Big Geordie
This one will go right to the wire on deadline day, but after more fannying about - it won't happen. Kinnear will then be able to trot out the well worn 'We tried' excuse. Remy will be on the only incoming transfer this summer - our business was done back in January. littlelunchbox
Desperate to come but he is going to spend the week persuading him Its quite clear he's not the one stopping the deal from happening, the agents are. Its not as easy as if he wants to come to sack them either before anyone says anything there are legal complications. If it was simply down to Gomis and Lyon this deal would have been completed ages ago. I thought it was the sell on fee. That 5% Lyon and nufc does not want to pay to St Etienne. Gomis is in dispute with Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas who is refusing to accept a deal lower than £8million for the France international. Sissoko, who joined Newcastle in January before his contract expired at Toulouse, says he has spoken to Gomis about becoming the latest French-speaking player to move to St James' Park and he remains hopeful he will move to Tyneside before the August transfer window shuts. Sissoko said: 'Bafe Gomis is my friend and he says to me that he wants to come to Newcastle, but it is not easy with the president (of Lyon) or an agent. 'I don't know if its finished yet or not. If he comes here, it is a very good move for him. I will keep the message the same to him - we would like him to come to Newcastle. Maybe I will talk to him this week again. 'Newcastle are a very good team and now we have to show it. The team is feeling good ahead of Manchester City. We have one of the toughest games you could have on the first game of the season but if I play well and hard maybe we can win there.' Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, who has confirmed he will be without injured loan striker Loic Remy for the opener at Manchester City, is also hopeful that Kinnear can bring a third summer signing for the Geordie club. He added: 'Joe is the football director here. Of course I will be talking to him. We have a week now where I am laying down plans for the start of the season and I need to know where we are on transfers. There is no information I can give you in or out.' Newcastle drew 1-1 with Braga on Saturday, thanks to a goal from captain Fabricio Coloccini who laid a wreath in honour of Sir Bobby Robson on the day of celebrations in the former Newcastle manager's name which marked the FA's 150th anniversary. Teasy
Desperate to come but he is going to spend the week persuading him Some Journalistic license there from Douglas like, at no point in those quotes does Sissoko say he's desperate. Just that he wants to come, but I suppose some persuasion may be reeded to get him to push for the move more.

This Aulas is the one thats stopping this transfer. Well he's not staying at Lyon. If its really him stopping the transfer because he wants us to pay certain extra fees then its only a matter of time before he folds. Especially if Marseille aren't an option this summer. There's no advantage for him to keep Gomis in this situation, as the closer they get to the close of the window the closer they get to losing him for nothing. He's got a great offer right there and if its just coming down to a dispute on agent/ex club payments then there will come a time when he'll have to compromise. As far as Marseille goes I'm not sure how they could be a serious option for Gomis unless he's really desperate to play for them. Apparently they can't afford him so they'd need him to dig in for a season at a club where he's not going to play leading up to the world cup. Then this 75 percent tax would mean he'd have to take a massive pay cut from what he's getting now (or what he'd get here).
Teasy
The very definition of an 'at least we tried' attempt at a transfer. What are you on about man? We've put in various offers until we've finally got a fee agreed. We've then agreed terms with the player and the only thing stopping it is complications on Lyons side and agents demands. Unless you've re-written the definition of "at least we tried" than no its nowt like it at all. As per usual we're not interested in buying players for their real value. We love a bargain, but I'm not sure what that has to do with my post. Also to be honest IMO £8m is above his value considering his contract situation, I never thought we'd offer that amount. Away Toon
I would have thought that the sell on fee if it actually exists would 100% have to be paid by Lyon. They allowed St. Etienne to insert it into the contract when they bought him. As for Agents fees surely that is between Gomis and his agent (s) as he is the one with the contract with them. If he wants to come he could make an effort financially as well. Smoke and mirrors.

Ronaldo
He's not staying at Lyon, unlikely to go to Marseille. He'll be here barring any daft posturing from us.
LRD
Tbf 8m is a very good fee and I can't blame our people if this collapses because of Aulas/agents being arses. What I have an issue is for 8m, we should have and already proceeded to a plan B (not Bent) by now. We drag this on and it eventually comes to this late stage in the transfer window that it's all-or-nothing. And we can't get similar for 8m?
Ronaldo
The fact that Bent has stayed put suggests to me we're serious about him as plan B and coming here is his first choice.
LRD
I know Bent's our plan B. What I meant was that we should have gone for a striker similar to Gomis and what we need. 8m should get us a reasonable one, contract dispute/ending or otherwise. You look at the lack of service to Cisse vs Braga and you think how Bent could exacerbate the problem, not solve it.
Ronaldo
It'll be easier to condense the play with Bent in the side due to his pace and general threat. But yes, he's far from a solution to the problem, same with Gomis.
toontownman
Exactly.. Gomis can at least work better in a 442 than Bent but neither will solve our lack of creativity through he middle or especially out wide.
LFEE
We need our midfield to create and score goals... For the last few year they've done neither...
Johny1982
Although the creativity in midfield wasn't great V braga, there were times through balls were played and because of Shola's lack of pace he gave up. If that was a remy then he'd have reached it. Because of the limitations of someone like shola and his lack of movement, xavi would struggle to create in that team, the way they're set up. Prob why he wants bent, though totally not the type of striker we need, at least his movement is good

Too often, we seem to be trying to open up a defence with one pass. Other teams seem to be developing a style where the midfield and striker(s) are combining to open up defences with a series of short passes. It feels like we're getting left behind. Yeh but other teams have movement upfront creating space. We have midfielders in cabaye and sissoko, marveaux, Ben arfa who can pick a pass but we are far too condensed in midfield and have poor movement upfront, apart from cisse. Those are creative players, signing another one wont make a difference if we play the same way and have limited movement up top

Teasy
Exactly.. Gomis can at least work better in a 442 than Bent but neither will solve our lack of creativity through he middle or especially out wide. Gomis could also provide an outlet, hold the ball up and also come deep and link play better than Cisse and far better than Bent. That in itself could help us create by helping us keep possession and allowing our midfield to push up a bit (if Pardew allows it...).
