Owen reveals Toon troubles

Recommended Posts

MICHAEL OWEN admits Newcastle's confidence has hit rock bottom.

The Toon have not won in their last 10 matches.

And Owen, who has scored twice in the last three games, says Kevin Keegan's men are desperate for a victory.

The England striker, 28, revealed: "Confidence isn't at it's best.

"There is nervousness throughout the side.

"We need a win and the sooner the better.

"As soon as we get that I think confidence will come flooding back."

Despite sitting just six points off the drop zone, Owen is not worried about getting dragged into a relegation battle.

He added: "We've got an awful lot of games left and we aren't in the relegation zone at the moment.

"We're not at panic stations but we are obviously well aware we need to get a result — and fast.

"This game against Blackburn on Saturday is one you look at and think Newcastle at home should be getting something out of it."

Course, if Shearer had said EXACTLY the same thing it'll be "yeah, that's right son, kick their arses".

Just hate the double standards, that's all.

For what it's worth, with Shearer, you probably would have been able to look back on the last few matches and remember his contributions or attempts to bring the team back into the game.

The Owen situation reminds me of how it was with Shearer in his last three seasons. A player who had slipped significantly from his peak, but who was still regarded as an automatic choice, based on reputation. The whole development of the side is held back as a result.

Be interesting to see exactly what he said without The Sun twisting the words.

"Confidence isn't at its best," striker Owen, 28, told BBC Radio 5 Live. "There is nervousness throughout the side.

"We need a win and the sooner the better. As soon as we get that I think confidence will come flooding back."

"We've got an awful lot of games left and we aren't in the relegation zone at the moment," said the England forward.

"We're not at panic stations but we are obviously well aware we need to get a result - and fast.

"This game against Blackburn on Saturday is one you look at and think Newcastle at home should be getting something out of it.

"If we can do that we can get a bit of confidence. We then play Liverpool and after that we have got a few games that are winnable.

"If we can get some confidence going into those games then I'm sure we can push onwards and upwards."

So Shearer was better than Owen - or more to the point, a different kind of player.  Yup, isn't Owen just the worst.

The same story could have been headlined "Owen: We need to win!" or something positive, and nobody would say a thing.  But it wasn't.  Because the papers haven't met their Newcastle bashing quota for the week.

Or "Owen: Liverpool game is unwinnable"

If the confidence of the team is low, you should see the confidence of the 52,000 suckers who have paid their hard earned to watch this.

What exactly is he saying wrong there?

Some of you are pathetic.

That the Liverpool game is a complete right-off basically. Nice to know we're going there to get hammered.
