And Owen, who has scored twice in the last three games, says Kevin Keegan's men are desperate for a victory. The England striker, 28, revealed: "Confidence isn't at it's best. "There is nervousness throughout the side. "We need a win and the sooner the better. "As soon as we get that I think confidence will come flooding back." Despite sitting just six points off the drop zone, Owen is not worried about getting dragged into a relegation battle. He added: "We've got an awful lot of games left and we aren't in the relegation zone at the moment. "We're not at panic stations but we are obviously well aware we need to get a result — and fast. For what it's worth, with Shearer, you probably would have been able to look back on the last few matches and remember his contributions or attempts to bring the team back into the game. A player who had slipped significantly from his peak, but who was still regarded as an automatic choice, based on reputation. The whole development of the side is held back as a result.
