Anyone seen nufc.coms brilliant piece today on Oliver?

Pre-season:

S-pain in the arse

Anyone who has happened to read the German FA's website since early May will have seen a news item (in English) referring to a pre-season tournament involving Bundesliga and Premier League sides.

Newcastle and Manchester City were mentioned, along with German outfits Hannover 96 and Hertha Berlin - competing for the Multi Media Sports Cup in a four team tournament at Real Mallorca's Son Moix Stadium in Palma.

However the subsequent award of a UEFA Cup place to Manchester City meant that their opening round in that competition would clash with the Mallorca event.

City then withdrew, leaving the organisers to find a replacement side - and NUFC unable to confirm their participation, for fear of possibly misleading supporters.

Unfortunately the Chronicle have now chosen to mention this, leaving fans in a dilemma over whether or not to risk booking flights before the prices increase still further.

The same source also claim that Hannover are replacing Man City when in fact they themselves publicised the event on their own website in early May.

And the dates they claim of Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd of August differ by 24 hours from information posted to German fans, whose schedule starts 24 hours before - which would make a big difference to flight bookers.

There's also a blatant attempt at sh*t-stirring in the piece by writing "unless he is overruled by director of football Dennis Wise, United manager Kevin Keegan....."

After being blamed by fans booking flights to Amsterdam last year when we wrote that Newcastle were listed by SkySports as participating in that event, we opted not to mention this Mallorca jaunt until it was confirmed 100%.

As of now, that's still the case.

So, if you want to book flights etc. for this tournament, then go right ahead - but at your own risk, not ours.

And if it all turns to dust, blame the slack-jawed old fool at Thomson House. If he was a horse, they'd shoot him.

"Toon in £10million Gomis Swoop" deserves scorn for being thoroughly misleading.

Anyone see the sad little pic of KK on the Chronicle's back page?  mackems.gif

The Journal were horribly wrong about Rozehnal yesterday like.

Despite the higher standards of writing present in the rag, they know even less than the Ronny do about what goes on at NUFC and it's been that way as long as I can remember.

Good idea, but I don't think Craig Hope is subtle enough when he asks the questions, while the post production is horrible.

I'm not missing any point, just thought i'd let the weekly Taylor bashing for him doing not much wrong commence.

I'm sure someone will have a problem with him talking to the Ronnie or suggesting he might be playing football in the 1st team next season.

The Chronicle is like a Steven Taylor mouthpiece these days, no bugger else talks to Oliver.

There was a article on the back page tonight with quotes from Taylor the article was written by Lee Ryder & not Olly. Edgar was quoted talking to the paper tonight.

Alan Oliver has been on holiday for about 10 days now.

Even with the net, the Chron in print is still my must go to item if anything happens regarding NUFC.

KK will guide NUFC back to the top: Harper

Jul 10 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

Steve Harper

NEWCASTLE United goalkeeper Steve Harper feels that the Magpies can make steady progress in the coming season under the guidance of Kevin Keegan.

The Toon boss has been working his players hard – albeit a depleted squad due to injuries and players yet to return from World Cup duty – during the first week of pre-season training.

Harper has been one of them and the battle for the No 1 jersey got under way again this week, with Republic of Ireland stopper Shay Given now fit again after groin problems last term.

Yet Harper – who has played Champions League football for Newcastle – is fully focused on making a major improvement on last season’s 12th place finish.

He said today: “Realistically we are looking at the top eight but hopefully it can be the top six.

“We finished 12th last year.

“And we’ve got to get back into the top half of the table.

“It won’t happen overnight.

“We have to first look to get back in the top six at some stage and then build year on year.”

Harper is by far Newcastle’s longest serving player and, like Given, is now entitled to a testimonial at St James’s Park.

The last two seasons have resulted in Harper making almost a half-century of appearances due to injuries to Given, although some of Harper’s performances would arguably have had him in the side on merit.

The Easington-born keeper is the only survivor from Keegan’s first stint in charge at the club after Special K signed him from Seaham Red Star in 1993.

During his time at United Harper has enjoyed several loan stints including time out at Huddersfield, Hartlepool and Bradford City.

Speaking on working with KK in his second spell as manager, Harper added: “He has made a massive impact.

“We couldn’t have been any lower when he came in.

“He’s lit the place up.

“We just hope he receives the backing to bring in the players to get us into the top half of the league.”

Meanwhile, the Chronicle understands that Birmingham City are yet to receive a concrete bid for ex-Arsenal young gun Seb Larsson, a player with whom Newcastle have been linked

The Championship side are thought to be determined to hold on to the Swedish international.

Sources at St Andrews say Newcastle would have to make a bid in excess of £4.5m to have any chance of landing the Euro 2008 star.
