Guest Walking in a waddle wonde
So do you think they gave him a list of free squad numbers and said pick one? or do we hold him in such high regard? or is it just squad numbers have taken the shine off of the old school 1-11 and they aren't too bothered about who gets/wants what anymore? I don't think anyone cares any more tbh. Maybe Owen with 10 (part of his image rights thing), Given/Harper with 1 (number one keeper etc) and the 'famous' NUFC number 9, but other than that I imagine they just take what they want. La Parka
I can see him playing far more games than people seem to think he will, he also will be a success.
Ally
Squad numbers won't be announced for a while yet. Remember when Duff stole the 11 shirt from Milner the other year? Cheeky twat.

stozo
Keegan says on World interview that he's a mixture of Rob Lee and Paul Bracewell, and linking player, superb passer of the ball, and he can see him over time learning to be a very good holding midfielder. What else in general does Keegan say on the Wolrd interview?

Guest Alan Shearer 9
I know it's early really and hard to compare a young player to someone with such a legacy, but I'm really starting to think Guthrie might be the new Pele after reading the last couple of posts. Baggio
Didn't baggio say this about 6 months ago. No, I said he's the only player out of the Bolton squad who I'd have here. I remember when all of the fuss was being made about Gareth Bale when he was at Southampton so I watched a game against Colchester (I think) to see what he was like, never heard of Guthrie before then but he was easily the best player on the pitch and his technique and ability on the ball really stood out, it wasn't until the match went on that the commentators pointed out that he was on loan from Liverpool so I didn't think anymore about it but he's someone who I've kept an eye on since. I can see where Keegan's coming from by saying he's similar to Rob Lee, I don't think he'll ever be the goal threat Lee was but he's someone I can see the team playing through when he matures as a player, I expect him to improve quite a bit over the next 12 months with Keegan in charge as he's the sort of manager who will encourage him to play to his strengths which will get the best out of him. I'm not sure why people are so surprised at this signing either, Keegan has said in the past he wanted a few young lads for the squad who he could bring through slowly, Giles Barnes was an example at the time but personally I'd rather have Guthrie just because he's got more drive in midfield, the potential is definitely there so lets see if Keegan can get the best out of him, I'm optimistic about it. Skirge
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2008/07/21/danny-guthrie-stunned-by-toon-support-72703-21377145/ Danny Guthrie stunned by Toon support Jul 21 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle NEWCASTLE UNITED new boy Danny Guthrie admitted he was blown away by the reception he enjoyed from the Toon Army at Hartlepool. And he says that the experience on his United debut has already left him craving for more. The 21-year-old midfielder impressed on his United bow, setting up a goal for Damien Duff before scoring his first goal for the club within eight minutes of coming off the bench. Reflecting on the rip-roaring welcome he received at Victoria Park, Guthrie told the Chronicle: “The fans were unbelievable. “For a pre-season game that was something else. You don’t get that at every club. “I know what the fans are like – I played in the Kevin Keegan return game for Bolton last season and it was one of the best atmospheres I have ever played in. “Playing at St James’s Park when it’s full is something that I am really looking forward to. “Playing in front of the Liverpool fans is similar, but Newcastle’s stadium is bigger, so I suppose they are going to be even louder and I can’t wait for that moment.” He added: “Coming to Newcastle just happened overnight for me. “This is just the start of things – it’s only a pre-season game and the season will only get better.” Newcastle made a shaky start to the clash with Hartlepool, but Guthrie’s introduction coincided with the black-and-whites taking control of the game. Speaking on his goal, Guthrie said: “It took a little deflection, but sometimes you need that, and if you don’t have a shot you don’t score. “To get a goal, an assist and a win was a big bonus. “The main thing was to get the rust off and get a feel of things again. “The first week has been really tough. “I’ve been finding out how things work up here. “It’s a really big club, but it’s nice to finally play a game. “It can only continue to get better for me.” Guthrie is one of only two new boys at United so far this summer, with Argentina international Jonas Gutierrez watching on from the stands against Pools. Yet one of Newcastle’s off-the-field appointments – strength and conditioning duo Mark Hulse and old boy Robbie Elliott – may also have a big influence on things this season. Kevin Keegan wants his side to be one of the fittest in the Premier League this season, and at the Vic his side weren’t left wanting as they got stronger as the game went on. Guthrie (below) added: “The tone has been set now and the boys have absolutely gave it everything. “And we felt the benefit against Hartlepool. “Towards the end, things were easier, but that’s because of the fitness levels.”
Cajun
Early days but he looks a decent player. Not afraid to take people on or try a tricky pass. Good work rate too.
