How do you just step down though? He can step down from the role but doesn’t he have a major stake in them? And he’s retaining that or being bought out? If he’s being bought out then it can only be from the majority owner?

It's not mandatory to be chairman and own a stake in the club.

He's probably just moving onto other things after a long time in the role.

But doesn’t he have a stake all the same? I thought he did and by the sounds of his statement he’s completely stepping away?

He does, it depends how big the stake is which I don't know off top of my head.

Anything above 25% then if someone bought it might have to launch a takeover of the club.

Feel like he did a great job at everything but the football side of things. Which is a massive drawback to be fair [emoji38] But he's left the club with a a really good  foundation.

I mean he did a pretty good job at the football side of things - we were seriously good under Poch with significantly lower wage bills than the big guns. We had to work under restrictions to get the new ground built, and it’s really a couple of glaring missed opportunities in transfer windows that poisoned the well.

Good time to leave tbh. We owe him a great deal, but it also seems like his constant involvement in almost everything was a little too much in the end. It was just extraordinarily bad luck that we didn’t win anything under Poch, but the Europa Cup feels like a nice bookend. Again.

ENIC own 85% or so, and Levy owns 30% of that 85%. Something like that. No idea what that means going forward. The rumour was that Qatar were interested but put off by Levy wanting to stay as Chairman or CEO or whatever, but Stifler told me Qatar weren’t interested at all so it must be something else.

Feels like bad news for us.

The owners will remain the same though no? He’s not sold his shares right?

Money will still be in their MO.  A new chairman might be better on the football front though.  But we’ll see - maybe they try the Liverpool/Arsenal route. They don’t have the brand recognition/legacy for that though.

i appreciate the inside perspective/balanced opinion because my first thought on hearing was a. the bloke has given spurs their longest period of (relative) stability and (relative) success possibly in their entire existence, certainly in the lifetime of most of their fans, and b. i guessed that the (presumably thick as fuck) internet fans would be throwing street parties at the news (and was correct in my guess)

Yeah it’s what you’d expect - there’s a vocal minority who have been Levy Out from day one, a fairly vocal minority who’ve defended him throughout (BSODL, can you guess what that stands for?) and then probably a lot of people who recognize the good and the bad. Like many things, it ebbs and flows depending upon what’s happening IRL. He’s done a unique job I think, but it’s been trending back towards Levy Out since Poch left, unsurprisingly.

It definitely feels like there have been a lot of people turning against him over the last couple of years, for both justifiable and unjustifiable reasons I think. Eze and MGW aside, it’s ended up being a very good transfer window yet the same old accusations of opportunism, brinkmanship and unnecessarily tough negotiations seem completely fair. It’s fascinating and a bit scary to see what’s next, but being charitable I do genuinely suspect he might have been biding his time until we were in a genuinely good position. He’s always been a fan, after all, and that means something,

Aye, I’m waiting for that talk, whilst they totally neglect the fact that it took 17 months and a CAT case against the Premier League to get it approved.

It’s much more Liverpool than Arsenal tbf. Aim to maximise brand value and growth by winning/competing at the highest level. That’s how they make money/succeed.

There’s like 8 aristocratic clubs in Europe, less that are in a league that can generate masses of revenue. Barca, Real, Juve, Bayern, Man U, Liverpool. You can argue Arsenal and the Milan clubs too - Arsenal not the European heritage but they are the 3rd biggest club in England the strongest league.

Under FSG Liverpool have reestablished themselves as an A1 elite club.  On and off the pitch. Arsenal are trying similar.

The owners are looking to make money through growing the value of the club and brand.

Spurs don’t have the natural potential as either. But Levy was content to do the CL money train thing, commercial revenue, stadium revenue etc.  Winning or seriously competing wasn’t the aim. He just saw it as a risky expense. FSG plans involve Liverpool being competitive, it’s key to growing the value of their investment.  Which is why they’ve allowed themselves to have what the second or third highest wage bill in the PL? No longer sell their best players.
