West Ham agree fee in region of £15m with Liverpool for Andy Carroll

Nasri will win the young player I'd of thought. Possibly even the proper one as well. They'd never give it to AC, it'd be too controversial in their eyes.

Should win both. He's been the PLs best player this season.

Except when playing against Newcastle.

Krul had no rights to stop that shot man, it was one of the best saves I've ever seen.

Did next to nowt else though, and it was a lucky strike.

6.

And that's not including his contribution in goals like Nolan's first vs Villa (+ maybe others that I can't think of right now).

Massive part in Barton's yesterday.

So that's 10 goals and 6 assists in 17 games and he isn't the penalty taker.

Not too shabby.

Just seen that that, in fact, puts him top of the Premier League combined goals/assists table. http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Premier_League_Combined_2010-11.html

What a hero  :)

He had horrible technique in the shoot out against Deportivo. If that's how he normally takes a penalty I'm not surprised he's low down in the pecking order.

He just smashed it. If you hit the target it will most likely go in.

Penalties is all about confidence and mentality. Technique isn´t that important as long as you have the right mentality. Ex. I would say Michael Owen was a very good finisher, but he was horrible at taking penalties. With the fantastic form and confidence Carroll is carrying, I would not be very anxious about him taking the penalties.

I'd disagree about Owen being a good finisher. OBviously he's decent, but his success was always about his ability to get into the positions so often, even at his best his finishing wasn't great. He scored loads against us, but I saw him miss loads of one on ones v us too.

Really?? I think he was one of the best during his peak.

I agree about that his positioning probably was his main strength, but I would say his finishing was great as well. He didn´t score from outside the box, but he always seemed to get his shots on goal when he was inside the penalty area, and he could score from every angle.

It was tragic during his last season here. Owen only knew how to finish one way: shift his body to the left, side foot to the keeper's left. Any time he went through on goal, was like every one in the stadium knew what he was going to do. If it didn't work that was it, he had no plan B.

If you don't have power in your shots then you need great precision to be a good spot kick taker. Owen has neither. Good finisher in his prime but theres a big difference between stepping up for a pen and sprinting towards goal one on one with the keeper.

It's a made up rumour though isn't it?

Because I've heard from an ex player* he's going to Chelsea. It's all bullshit man.

*Not one of ours or of any professional note since the 50's.

The thought process behind these articles:

Pick a player in form: Andy Carroll

Pick a team that needs a player in his position: Tottenham

Pick a fee based on the following criteria of nationality, age, international caps and importance to current team: £30m.

Pick a made up source from all the others in your mind. Got a good one? Class. Make up a sentence from him about the players ambitions and discontent about the managerial situation.

Write article.

I heard he's off to Bolton. They'll ease him into the team ready for when Davies retires (he's retiring next season). My source has never lied before, no reason not to believe him.

You nailed every step.

1. Name reasonably believable team.

2. Give believable backstory.

3. Use the term 'mate' or 'source' depending on required ambiguity level.

4. Explain why the source is reliable, but cover grounds when it inevitably turns out to be bollocks.

Former Newcastle United director Dennis Wise says he fought to keep Andy Carroll at the club when "certain people" wanted to sell the striker.

Wise, 44, spent 14 months at Newcastle before leaving the club in April 2009.

"We had an offer and I said no - the boy was the future of the club. Some people agreed and some did not," Wise exclusively told BBC's Focus Forum.

Last weekend Carroll, 21, scored his 10th goal of a season which has also seen him make his England debut.

"At the time Carroll would have been sold, but instead I got him to sign a new contract," added Wise, who in January 2008 was appointed as a "football-related" executive director by owner Mike Ashley, shortly after the appointment of Kevin Keegan as manager.

Wise, whose brief role at Newcastle was to focus on transfers, scouting and youth development, also insisted he "didn't sign" Uruguayan midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez, a player that Keegan has said had been "forced" on him.

606: DEBATE

How vital has Andy Carroll been to Newcastle in 2010?

Gonzalez was signed on transfer deadline day on Sunday, 31 August 2008, an act which prompted Keegan to tender his resignation on Thursday, 4 September 2008.

The Uruguayan midfielder's transfer featured heavily in the arbitration tribunal that awarded Keegan £2m in damages plus interest after the former Newcastle manager won his case against the club for constructive dismissal.

The tribunal's report concluded that the deal to bring Gonzalez to the club, on a loan basis, was "in the commercial interests of the club."

The report continued: "The 'commercial interests', according to the club, were that the signing of the player on loan would be a 'favour' to two influential South American agents who would look favourably on the club in the future.

"The loan deal cost the club nearly £1m in wages for a player who was not expected to play for the first team but no payment was made by the club to the agents in respect of the deal."

Wise became a focus for discontent among Newcastle fans after Keegan's departure and he eventually left the club shortly before Newcastle dropped into the Championship.

"People don't understand what really went on at the club," added Wise, defending his time at Newcastle. "People surmise what happened, but they don't know what happened."

When was this? I can't find anything about Carroll's contract situation before the one he signed this season.
