Smith's started two reserve games in midfield which raises the possibility that he might be considered as competition for Butt  (yes you really did read that last sentence).

Would you give him a go as the holding midfielder, stick with Butt or go for someone else? This is for the next couple of matches only so don't say Guthrie or Barton as I'm assuming they are not training properly yet.

I am going for Smith as well. He's clumsy but at least he's energetic. Butt was a better player but that was 10 years ago, now his passing and ball retention are shot. Smith's better in the air as well, and with Nolan not being the quickest we need more runners in the team.

As poor as Butt is he must be picked before Smith every time. Its an absolute total myth that Smith can play in midfield and he's never ever backed up the myth that he can. He might run around a lot kicking people but he's got absolutely no discipline, and he would be a disaster in that position imo. Butt hasn't really got the legs anymore, and he gives away the ball too much, but he's a lot safer bet than Smith. He's positionally aware and he's got a cool head on him. Smith is bloody rash to be kind. The way Smith plays fools a lot of people.

Where is the 'play them both' option?

Why not play the lot.

Geremi-Butt-cacapa-Smith.

That scares me seeing that

A big ball of fail. :-[

Still cannot get how Cacapa was so utterly revered by his last clubs fans though. There must be something to him, just seems he moved to late in his career to be able to adapt properly.

It's like getting a choice between

a) being bummed to death by a zebra

b) being bummed to death by an ageing zebra with bad timing

Neither are exactly fantastic options, one option just has better movement

Really well put.

The tagline for Alien vs Predator comes to mind.

Whoever wins, we lose.

25 people have got VERY short memories. If you think Butt is a liability then there's no way Smith should be getting votes.

I voted for Geremi for no reason other than he can still occasionally pass the ball.
