THE man who sold Newcastle United their first Premier League kit is hoping to become the new owner of the Magpies.

The Chronicle was today alerted to an official and recent approach from Geoff Sheard, who failed in a bid to take over Sheffield Wednesday last season.

Sheard is spearheading a North West-based consortium’s bid, which is understood to be backed by a renowned American company with a big interest in sport.

It is believed Sheard, who was also linked with a move with United last February after Mike Ashley had removed Newcastle from the market, would appoint Alan Shearer as manager if he was successful in his bid.

Sources close to Sheard also suggest the American company backing his bid also have sufficient funds to support the Magpies in the transfer market. But time is running out on that score, with a week to go before the window shuts.

United’s managing director Derek Llambias told the Chronicle: "Geoff is dealing with Keith Harris and we are still waiting for proof of funds."

Newcastle yesterday confirmed that Tyneside businessman Barry Moat is also in the running, albeit under pressure from a one-week deadline issued by Mike Ashley, and it is understood that Sheard responded to a request by Seymour Pierce to deposit the required amount into a lawyer’s client account.

A source close to Sheard said today: "He’s keen to run a football club.

"It didn’t work out when he tried to take over Sheffield Wednesday but feels he has something to offer Newcastle.

"He’s got serious backing and is in negotiations with Seymour Pierce."

Sheard’s first link with the Magpies was in 1993 during the Sir John Hall era at St James’s, when he worked on the sales team for sportswear brand Asics, who provided Newcastle with their first kit in the newly-formed Premier League.

Like current owner Ashley, Sheard also has experience of running sports shops. He oversaw the running of Preston North End’s club shop in the ’90s with the Deepdale side having several small outlets in the Lancashire town.

He then worked as a consultant for Sockatyes, who provide sock tie-ups to professional clubs.

Sheard is thought to have a wide range of contacts in the game and is well-connected with clubs on a global scale, including a clutch of sides in the US in Major League Soccer.

Sheard is based in Lancaster and lives in a restored barnhouse in Nether Kellet. Despite his bid for Sheff Wed, he is understood to be a boyhood fan of tomorrow night’s Carling Cup opponents Huddersfield.

When United was taken off the market in January, it emerged weeks later that Sheard had been linked with buying United amid claims he was seeking to bring David Beckham, then on loan to AC Milan from LA Galaxy, to St James’s as part of a deal.

If they are seriously interested (and have enough backing/money) WHERE have they been all summer?

First thing I thought. Fuck 'em, Moat in.

What about this confidentiality thing.  Maybe they have been sniffing around Llambias' hoop for the past couple of months.

There will be no announcement today, other than talks are on going with Moat and a North-West based consortium who will be performing DD this week after giving the relevant financial information over the last weekend

That's either one hell of a guess or I duly apologise.

So if they haven't provided proof of funds yet, then he hopes to complete in seven days what it took Moat the entire summer to do?

Maybe they'll offer £100 outright and seal the deal straight away?  Dunno, I don't know how these things work tbh.

Fuck it, I'm going to buy it myself at that price. I know, I know - it's very expensive but I can just about afford it if I sell the car.
