f***ing ridiculous that they let countries with 30k inhabitants have football teams in international tournament qualifying. Defies logic.

 It defies logic that they let countries join an international tournament between countries?

They're as entitled to play football at international level as anyone else. That's what "qualifiers" are for. Why shouldn't they be able to represent their nation?

 I would say it defies logic not to include any and all eligible countries.

Agreed but they should have to do more to be able to be put into these groups.

They are clearly not good enough and just end up being wipping boys, put them amongst the Faroe Islands and that lot and if they improve as a footballing nation bump them up to the groups with the big boys.

Would make qualifying more competitive and interesting too.

They're entitled to play football but there's no need for countries of their ilk to qualify automatically for the groups. It's not like they're going to improve enough for any of their games in the groups not to be pointless.

So are you suggesting a 3-tier tournament? (Pre-qualifiers, qualifiers, main tournament) They may as well just give up playing football full-stop if that's the case because even the likes of Luxembourg & Faroes are much better than San Marino. They should have the right to start with the same chance as qualification as someone like England even if they will get thumped, otherwise footballers in these countries will just not bother.

I dunno, I think the potential for a minnow to upset the natural order of things is pretty interesting. Especially in the group format.

Moldova's draw with Greece in 2010 WCQ group stage, in a game Greece should have easily won, probably prevented Greece from winning the group (though they did eventually qualify).

Start everyone on an even playing field. If England can't beat the likes of San Marino or the Faroe Islands in open group play, that's on England, not on those teams.

Right.

UEFA have 13 World Cup spots. 53 teams trying to get into those spots.

Sack off one of the teams, and make 13 groups of 4 teams. First place goes through. Home & away games. Gets a few minnows qualifying, reduces the amount of international games.

DONE.

Nothing is wrong with prequalifiers. CAF has a similar amount of member nations and for the upcoming World Cup, the lowest 24 (I think) ranked sides have a knockout round to enter the main draw. There is no problem with giving more successful sides a bye to the group stages based on a numerical formula of past results. You cannot only focus it on certain incompetent teams, though. It would have to include at least 18 countries, as there are nine groups. It would be unfair to only make qualification more difficult for nations Interpolic thinks are irrelevant because they have less people than Peckham.

UEFA's qualifying has an unnecessarily high amount of games, tbf. Massive and inefficient for both tournaments.

Have it that the worst performing qualifying team per tournament points then gd sits it a tournament out then you don't have to drop a nation permanently and it's a goer.

Divn't be daft man. Just make 2 countries merge.

Or do a playoff beforehand. Faroes vs San Marino.

Nah it adds a nice element of Russian Roulette to proceedings. Besides more than likely it would just mean Faroes and San Marino take it in turns to sit out.

So that means the other team play no competitive football for another 2 years? What chance will they ever have then?

I provided a perfect solution. Just make them merge with another nation.

San Marino meet Wales, Wales meet San Marino.
