Buried in a rticle about how NUFC supporters no longer care is some information on how training went today (yesterday for you in the UK):

Keeper Steve Harper was first in, at nine on the dot, closely followed by Nicky Butt, Alan Smith, Steven Taylor, Danny Guthrie, Kevin Nolan and Jose Enrique, with Obafemi Martins bringing up the rear. The former Inter Milan striker, a recent target for Stoke and Portsmouth, could at least point to injury as an excuse for being late and duly continued his rehabilitation from a summer hernia operation.

Five internationals were given leave of absence, while Owen, Viduka, Claudio Cacapa, Peter Lovenkrands, David Edgar, who joined Burnley yesterday, and Ignacio Gonzalez were all missing after their contracts expired at midnight on Tuesday.

An hour or so of initial fitness work started with bleep tests, where players sprint between cones and step up the intensity each time their monitor sounds, and there was an early triumph for Ryan Taylor, who won what amounts to a survival of the fittest, ahead of Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan.

Hughton followed it with a kickabout before calling a halt at 1pm and allowing the players to drift away, their fitness regime underway but none the wiser about what lies ahead.

NUFC must be the only club that can get a negative article in the press due to only 5 people coming to watch the 1st day of pre season training!!

And that wasn't enough for the editors - they went BACK wrote essentially the same article about how Barton is now free to roam the training grounds.

Shadenfrued enough for two articles and we're a championship team now. You'd think they have had enough.

:tickedoff:

that picture makes me angry. cheers for your contributions last season lads, nice to see you laughing about it  :dave:

What would you have thought if thel looked miserable and depressed? I seriously doubt they're laughing at the fact they're in the championship. ;)

Newcastle United players at training session

Jul 2 2009 Evening Chronicle

NEWCASTLE United players have been working on their fitness after returning to the club's Benton HQ for pre-season training.

Steve Harper, Joey Barton, Oba Martins, Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor were among the pros looking to make up for last season's relegation disappointment.

Chris Hughton took charge of the session as they shook off the holiday cobwebs in preparation for the Championship.

Apologies for ignorance here, but who's the incredibly short skinhead in the first group running picture who look like a mini-Alan Hutton?
