Guest Chubby Jason
3 years is an awful long time to give someone a volatile as Barton. He's been here about 3 years now & has spent most of it injured, suspended or in jail. He's having a good season now but is always capable of doing something thick. Dave
Two years is fair IMO.
Segun Oluwaniyi
I agree with Cajun cause I didn't have a good word to say about him till this season. Don't agree with the hitting 31 nonsense. It's the usual stuff peddled and often by managers as well that players turn s*** at 30. Tell Alex Ferguson that. It's not that the players decline that quickly or stop being good at this age. The problem is that players who experience injury or lack of form at this stage of their careers are much less likely to recover. It would be a very different situation if HBA was Barton's age. Guest sicko2ndbest
Two years is fair IMO. Based on his age and what he has done over the course of his tenure, it is more than fair however He knows that he can get a better contract at the likes of Birmingham, Villa and West Ham (should they stay up)

Like I said before, the 2 year contract kicks in at the end of his current contract which ends in Summer 2012. Is another club really going to buy him off NUFC this Summer and give him a 3 or more year contract on more money than NUFC pay him?
Pilko
We should compromise, give him two years with some sort of appearance/fitness/performance clause in for a third.

ATB
yeah but Barton probably want three years because he want to be garanteed money even if he isn´t good enough. If he is just half as good as now he would get a new contract after the new two years contract, for sure.

Guest sicko2ndbest
I can see joey losing this battle! Nobody knows exactly but the hold up seems to be the contract length. For someone so confident in his ability put why not put his money where his mouth is and play well enough the next 2 years to earn an extension! 80
The question is why he's chosen to publicise these rumours. Or make them up, if there really weren't any seeing I can't see what he could have been aware of that none of us have known about.
LRD
No idea why he will want to do that but I wouldn't be surprised if they manipulate the media to discredit Barton if contract negotiations don't go their way in the summer. as they did with Steven Taylor (even if most agree he doesn't deserve a pay hike). Same goes for Enrique.

Or make them up, if there really weren't any seeing I can't see what he could have been aware of that none of us have known about. He's hardly likely to have made them up. More likely some journo has asked him about the rumours and he wants to nail them early.

The media are always out for a story, I doubt they needed Mike Ashley's secret spin doctors to get the Taylor negotiations in print.

Well yes, I don't think Taylor's people (his father mainly) have ever been slow to play the PR game themselves.

I'm not itk but how else will you explain the wages being mentioned? Unless either party leaks it out we will never get clearcut figures like the 40k and 60k per week being mentioned. And it's to no advantage to Steven Taylor if such specific details leak out.

I just doubt it's some sort of orchestrated spin campaign. I honestly don't think Ashley can be bothered with that.

Wallace
It says in the article that it was not the nationals who were speculating that he had refused to play therefore implying it was local. If that was the case, everyone would be gossiping about it all over Tyneside and I've not heard anything until those quotes appeared today. Anyway, didn't Barton sit on the bench last weekend which he wouldn't have done if there had been a falling out.

BlueStar
Seems a strange thing to say, pretty much any 'whisper' or twitter bollocks ends up on here so they must have been very quiet whispers.
durhamunigeordie
It's just the Barton factor kicking in. On saturday me and my mates were saying there is always a chance with Joey that the kitman has given him a pair of shorts with creases in and he's gone off on one. Whilst i'm 99% sure I believe that hes injured because of who he is there is always that doubt in my mind. A journalist thinking along the same lines has probably just put it to Pardew and he has responded.
