Newcastle United 1 - 0 Leicester City - 31/08/09 - post match reaction from p22

Carroll's a beast in the air but he's slow of foot and we don't have wingers who can hold up the ball then consistently put a good ball in the box.  Carroll has looked very one dimensional and we don't have the personnell to take advantage of it.  Ranger looked very cool in the second half.   He got the ball down and knew where his teammates were and had the ability to put the ball in a good spot for them.  I was quite impressed.   It was only one game, but still it was something to buildon.

Harper 7 - Made some good saves first half, not much to do second half.

R. Taylor 6 - Ok, going forward, delivery was poor, solid at the back.

S. Taylor 7 - Solid, defence as a whole kept them quiet second half.

Simpson 6 - Out of position a few times first half, solid in the second.

Enrique 6 - Didn't need Geremi's help marking N'Guessan for me. Class in defence, sloppy passing.

Geremi 6 - First half   Second half looked a lot better all round, calm on the ball, got forward more as well.

Barton 5 - Struggled, poor passing, didn't offer much going forward.

Smith 8 - Brilliant in the holding role again, battled for everything. Deserves role of captain.

Guthrie 8 - Has that much needed drive in midfield, has the extra legs the others don't, cracking finish for the goal.

Nolan 7 - Continues to get better playing in the hole, did well at holding the ball up for the goal.

Ranger 9 - Give him MOM, very good performance for his second game, never stopped running, battled for everything, was vital in the build up for the goal.

The subs didn't really get enought time for a rating.

Harper: 8 - Two good saves to prevent us going one down, caught well and distributed well for a change.

R. Taylor: 6 - Steady away, crossing was hit and miss.

Simpson:  6 - Solid.

Taylor: 7 - Probably our best defender today.

Enrique: 6 - Solid but sloppy going forward.

Barton: 4 - Awful, seemed to give the ball away every time he got it.

Smith: 8 - Worked his bollocks off, pretty much nullified the threat of Howard and broke up play well.

Guthrie: 7 - Brilliant in parts, sloppy in parts, took his goal brilliantly.

Geremi: 5 - Slow and gave the ball away a lot. Put the odd half decent ball in, marginally better than Barton though.

Nolan: 5 - Got more involved in the second half but a pretty nothing performance.

Ranger: 7 - Worked his bollocks off. Nothing special first half but created several chances in the second, deserved a goal.

Spot on. He was absolutely dreadful tonight. How some people on here rate him our best player is just staggering.

was tonight's performance typical of Barton? Clearly not

Agree with most of that, people are being a bit nicey-nicey because we won. I'd give Nolan a 6 though.

Aye, come to think of it he did test the keeper a couple of times and supported Ranger in parts, should of probably given him a 6.

There is clearly some negative comments about Bartons performance, but you need to bare in mind the fact he has just come back from injury and it was evident with quite a few misled passes.

He was looking for some inventive passes at times and with that came the obvious risk of interceptions, but at least he showed some desire for creativity! He will sharpen up with games under his belt and more and more of those passes will pull off, creating hopefully more than a few goal scoring opportunites!

Notice all the others faith in his ability - they see it on the training ground day in day out and they were looking to give him a lot of the ball! Certainly it seems that there is more to come from the lad!

Lad behind me spent the full 90 minutes telling everybody how shite Geremi was and how Smith was dropping far too deep, ignoring how he was nullifying Howard and basically keeping him out of the game for large spells.

We all know Geremi is shite, but from the word go it was constant negativity towards him, ignoring the fact he isn't a winger, very annoying.

Ranger looked much better than against Huddersfield, Nolan was poor, Simpson was brilliant in defence and Guthries goal was good. The goal had to come from midfield and I'm glad he stepped upto the plate.

How is it staggering? Who is the best attacking player at the club then? Go on, say Nile....

People have been watching him play for a long time and base their view on his performances for City and us under Keegan. He was shit tonight of course but if he finds his form, he'll be a cracking asset in this league.

I'd say it was tbh. He strolls through most games looking half a yard behind the pace. It was bad enough in the Premier but I didn't expect it at this level. He needs to pull his finger out.

Yes. Can't tackle, can't pass, weak as a kitten. Volatile as fuck. Worth every penny of £60k a week.

Least Barton tried to carry the ball from midfield, spread the play well on a couple of occasions too.

Also, note to Donaldson. You aren't good enough for them boots lad.

I really liked Ranger if he is level headed and get a good manager he will be an awesome player...  He is very talented and natural while the likes of Amobie and the others are all about power and hard work. It has been a while since Tynside saw a talented stricker. I hope he play in every game and develop as a player. I also think we need to tie him up with a long contract.

Should have won game with more than one goal, because leicester were awful - we should have done better!

Ranger worked hard, but should have been more spot on goal and tried to shoot some more - when he gets more confidence and more games it will come, i hope :)

btw, geremi !?! - why god, why us!

Have to say that Harper, Taylor, Smith, Guthrie and Rangers looked fucking class, the rest of the guys were pretty good aswell..

Quailman made a good point about some of Barton's mis-placed passes, which were noticeably ones which were attempting to split their defence or add some creativity.

Think his attitude did look a bit odd in the first half though.
