Realistic Transfer Targets January 2010

Really hope we don't get that other Taylor. Would rather give Kadar a run of games than that guy. Think we are pretty fucked this window. Would be very, very surprised if at least one player hasn't left by the end too. A lot of clubs will be getting desperate right about now and will see a fair few of our players as decent signings(more fool them).

Is Martin Taylor that bad (for this division), I only really remember him when he came to prominence a few years ago and he looked decent in the Premiership.

No idea what he is like though now, people don't think he will even look good in this division?

Just remembered this:

Fast forward a few months and it's pretty bang on, some coincidence like.

And I just remembered this:

Not that I want to ignite this whole debate again but I absolutely cringed when I folk started comparing Beckford with Cole, my word.

:dowie:

I remember you saying something along those lines.

Another loannee who won't be coming back is Khiz- snapped up by Reading on loan till the end of the season according to Sky Sports transfer clockwatch(!).

Apparently, we may or may not be after Edward Ofere from Malmö FF.

Their chairman has today said: "If Newcastle are interested, they just need to get in touch, but they need to hurry as the transfer window closes soon.

"We haven't heard anything yet, but we are prepared for offers to come in for him."

Sounds very strange indeed, there is no indication to why would be interested, but he still mentions us. It's probably nothing like, just thought I'd post it anyway.

EDIT: He's a Nigerian striker by the way, his contract runs out in a year. Don't rate him too highly myself.

Look, Healy wants to be snapped up.  Let's take him.  Quality finisher when he's playing often.

We could really do with a good right winger, but Hughton won't do that cause of Pancrate.  We need a good CM but he won't displace Butt/Smith/Nolan.

So bring Healy in, bring in a decent defender (get a Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal prospect or something) and pray Taylor's injury's not too bad.

Losing out on Harewood isn't the end of the world, in the end there's no amount of similar (average) strikers who are no doubt available on a cheap or a loan.

There will be plenty of Harewood's and Healy's available on loan when the window closes. It's more a question of whether we can hold our nerve and get someone of a bit more quality. I doubt it though.

He was linked in the Swedish press or something a few days ago iirc.

That article where Hughton "admits Williamson is unlikely to be coming now" - I saw the exact same quotes from him in another article where it said he was "poised to join". There isn't anything from him there that says he is or isn't coming - and SSN and all the Pompey ITKs seem to think the deal is still on.

Yeah, that's where the story seems to come from. I don't read much Swedish press, as it's often even worse than the English press

He's incredibly bad. Probably going to go on and get us 200 goals just because I say this, but I can't see us going for him.

This is from the Jarrow and Hebburn Gazzete, article published 4 hours ago:

Before then, Hughton is hopeful of progress in the transfer market, with the club still working on the Williamson deal.

It broke down on Friday at the Portsmouth end over monies owed to the defender's former club Watford.

It's a case of wait and see.

Why Mike Ashley has one week to save Newcastle United

Mike Ashley likes a gamble.

Whether it be a his famous flutter at the casino that won a six-figure fortune. A spread-bet on bank shares that lost a fortune. Or a dare with Derek Llambias that forced the club’s MD to streak across St James’s Park’s pitch earlier in the season.

But there is one punt that Ashley appears to be shying away from. Funding one last push for promotion and significantly strengthening Chris Hughton’s squad.

The odds of success appear good. Newcastle are already top of the Championship. The pay-out massive, including the multi-million boost in revenue that Premier League generates.

But Ashley, inexplicably, isn’t getting his, or the club’s, wallet out.

The calculation is simple. It can be summed up by tweaking one of those chilling election time slogans. Instead of One Week to Save the NHS, this week’s billboard outside St James’ Park should read: Mike Ashley, you have one week to save Newcastle United.

Overdramatic? Perhaps a little. It depends if your Brown Ale glass is half empty, or half full.

The complacent might say Newcastle will be OK. They can go six points clear if they win a game in hand. They have a solid, dependable squad full of experience. All they need is a win to get the momentum back.

But today the glass feels half empty. Perhaps that comes from eight years of covering the ups, and frequent downs of North East football.

I’d point out that United haven’t won in three league games ahead of tomorrow’s visit of Crystal Palace. They’ve been out-played twice in a week by a far more accomplished footballing side in West Brom.

Defender Steven Taylor had a longer injury that could keep him out for at least two months. Only Danny Simpson has been signed this month, but he is injured now too. Ryan Taylor is suspended. Loan targets Marlon Harewood has broken his foot and won’t be returning. Jermaine Beckford, no loss, turned the Geordies down.

If Geremi, as seems likely, departs, that will mean Hughton has to sign three new players just to keep the numbers in his squad the same as the first half of the season.

Could Blackburn lure Alan Smith, a key man on an off the pitch, away? Ashley may be tempted to get another £3 million salary off the books.

What is Ashley’s reaction to demands for more investment? Impossible to know since we’ve not had any statements from him since the summer.

But I’d guess he’d ask: More money on transfer fees? More wages to pay? This squad already trousers £40-odd million between them?

I’m sure he’d point out that he’s forked out £258 million on Newcastle United so far, according to the last accounts - a quarter of his fortune - with little chance of getting even that sum half back.

That £258 million is down in the accounts as a “loan“ to the club from his personal fortune. He reserves the right to charge an interest rate on it, but the last accounts, 18 months of date now, show he wasn’t. That’s a positive gesture given the debt turmoil and interest repayments owners have burdened Liverpool and Manchester United with. But we await the new accounts for a updated, clearer picture.

So the sums involved are enormous. The personal losses for Ashley enormous. But surely he realises that to get his asset back into the big time, he needs to speculate further.

Personally I doubt he will. Beyond the small fee paid for Simpson last week I doubt the appetite, or money, is there to significantly strengthen the club for promotion, and beyond that the Premier League.

One of the more dismaying answers we get from Hughton, who has done a great job in testing times, is that he is 90 per cent focused only on promotion. New signings, he says, are for that purpose, rather than with an eye on being useful next season should the dream scenario unfold.

The choice for Ashley is clear. He can emerge from this season with some credit, and a team back in the top flight if he plays it right this week.

More than 40,000 Newcastle fans have shown him the way at every home game by putting their money on the table this season, attending matches in adversity, when they could have walked away disillusioned.

I fear the one gamble Ashley wants to take is of cost cutting and squad shrinkage, rather than speculation and strengthening.

So come on Mike, spin the wheel, throw the dice, turn the cards, whatever your favourite term for a flutter is.

Geremi's exit from the ACON could have an effect on our incoming transfers, his wages coming off the bill in January as apposed to June could free up some cash for Hughton to use in this window. As there is no chance of Ashley unlocking the padlock on his wallet.
