Hello young Jonathan. This is Mabi De Almeida the Angolan manager. I am very sorry to hear about your current situation. We here at the Angolan football association are both embarrassed and disgusted by the disastrous 12 minutes that evidently cost you a lot of your hard earned money. We are very happy to inform you that we are 100% committed to making this situation better. Thanks to the hard work of first team coach zizi makololooo and team doctor Kawabi Tuzububu we have come to an arrangement where we can compensate you.

Star Striker Manucho has verbally agreed to give you his most prized asset. A signed Hull city shirt from last season. Sadly Manucho has lost the shirt where he scored his only Hull goal against Fulham so he will donate his second most prized shirt (the shirt where he took a shot that was only 5 yards wide of the goal). We hope this helps you a little.

Please give me your account number so I can arrange for the shirt to be smuggled out of the country.[\quote]

It's been a great week for Football Finance porn.  Like this little piece of crap titled "Liverpool: the decline and fall of the Red Empire" from the Times. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/columnists/simon_barnes/article6988503.ece

First Manchester United and now Liverpool.  All of sudden the internets have been flooded with all these articles detailing all the signs of their inevitable decline-- the debt, the aging stars, the donkeys they paid a fortune for, the inept and greedy American owners--- all of it good stuff. I'm really enjoying it all, schadenfreude and all that.

But deep down I know it's just pathetic. Nothing really bad is going to happen to either of these clubs. Nobody is going to pull a Leeds. Liverpool might miss the Champions League-- this year. Maybe.

Manchester United and Liverpool are knocked out of the FA Cup and they think the sky is falling.

SSN went around asking managers about pre-match eating habits, it was really funny. a lot of the managers are really likable if you move the topic from football.....but anyway, they were all saying how its fine to have a pizza, pasta or even some wine. then big sam comes on with his droning, depressing voice saying "well thats not part of our plans here. as you know, we're into healthy eating habits *blah blah blah* so we don't do that."

what a miserable man

Anyone else think that 115k quid fine for WHam is getting off light? I do.

What would our fine be if this happened at SJP? I would guess at least half a million.

For reference:

Why on earth would they fine us more? I can count on one hand how many fans have invaded our pitch in the past 10 years or so. :idiot2:

Conisdering they have had more money to spend than most clubs in the league, can the season so far be called a failure for them? IIRC, a £30m-ish net spend last summer. Poor.

Nice to see Matty turning it around after a bad few years on & off the pitch.

Matty Pattison was 11 when his family left Johannesburg for England, but he stubbornly kept his boykie accent. Well, most of it: today he sounds 70% Alberton, 30% Newcastle-on-Tyne.

But Pattison, 23, formerly of Newcastle United and Norwich City, says he feels entirely South African. And he is bullish about his prospects of making the final World Cup cut following his selection to the home-based Bafana training squad in Durban this week.

"I've got what it takes to play in the World Cup finals. I just have to keep doing what I'm doing for Mamelodi Sundowns."

What he does for Downs is keep the ball moving. "My game's a lot simpler than a lot of South African midfielders. I give and go, and create space to allow the wingers to attack more. "

He feels his game has matured under the tutelage of Sundowns coach Hristo Stoichkov.

"The main thing is I've had a bit of consistency in my favourite position, in the centre of midfield. At Norwich I played a lot of games on the left. I can do a job there, but you're not going to get the best out of me in that role. At Sundowns I started out on the left, but now I'm more appreciated in the middle."

The notoriously demanding Downs supporters did not give Pattison an effusive welcome when he arrived, often demanding his substitution during games. But they've slowly changed their tune, recognising that Pattison's energy, power and consistency have contributed much to Downs' impressive league run.

Bafana assistant coach Pitso Mosimane has high praise for Pattison. "I don't think we should leave out a talent like that without checking his potential," says Mosimane.

"When he first came to Sundowns, I must say I wasn't really impressed by him. But he needed to adapt to the local game, and then he showed what he can do. Pattison works hard, and he's tactically aware. He's not flashy - he plays for the team. He's forever in the right position, covering spaces that need covering."

And since Benson Mhlongo is unlikely to recover from injury in time for World Cup selection, there's a vacancy for one defensive midfielder to understudy Macbeth Sibaya and Kagisho Dikgacoi in the final squad.

Pattison's chief rivals for the job are Lance Davids and Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

Mbulelo Mabizela would be a strong contender, but he's not in the Durban squad. Carlos Alberto Parreira clearly believes the former captain's self-discipline is not up to scratch.

Speaking of which, does Pattison have the temperament to match his ability? Local fans were amused to read a report in the Daily Mail last year claiming Pattison was arrested for driving drunk in Norwich at 8am, clad only in a T-shirt and underpants. The report claimed he was rushing to attend a club training session.

"I definitely wasn't in my underpants!" laughs Pattison. "I went out partying with some mates and afterwards we went to a McDonald's. I was the one driving, I was over the limit and I have no excuses for that.

"But the papers in England are a disgrace. Most of the story was a complete fabrication. The Daily Mail had to print an apology the next week after my representative and the club took it up with them."

Never mind. Bafana fans don't care whether he was wearing just his undies, a pair of trousers or a tutu on that boozy morning adventure in Norwich.

What really matters is whether Pattison looks the part in a Bafana shirt - and the upcoming friendly against Zimbabwe may offer some clues.
