Llambias says buyers failed to match asking price

Nov 28 2009 By Lee Ryder

DEREK LLAMBIAS says that Newcastle United failed to find a buyer who could match Mike Ashley's asking price last summer.

The managing director was speaking in Newcastle's match programme ahead of the clash with Swansea City.

He said: "As you know, Mike made it clear after the end of last season that he was trying to sell the club and although there were a number of interested parties, none of them were able to match the £100m asking price.

"As a result, Mike decided that the best course of action, one that would put the welfare of the club at the top of the agenda, would be to remove the club from the market and concentrate solely on the aim that everyone connected with the club passionately desires - promotion straight back to the Premier League.

"His commitment is unwavering and the additional large sums of money he has recently pumped into the club amply demonstrate that.

"I would urge all supporters of this truly great football club to come together, get behind the team and, whatever grievances you may or may not have, put them to one side for the benefit of seeing Newcastle United regain their position in the elite of English football.

"When this stadium is packed and in full voice, there is nowhere quite like it, and if we can stay positive and get right behind [manager] Chris [Hughton] and the players, then hopefully we can stay at the top of the Championship and win promotion at the first attempt.

"Mike and myself are here to do our absolute best for Newcastle United and with you on board, we fervently believe we can deliver a successful football club for you to take pride and joy in."

Llambias also praised Hughton for his role in the on-pitch revival after his third spell as caretaker became permanent.

He said: "After the bitter disappointment of relegation at the end of the last campaign, Chris has succeeded in pulling everyone together and he has put us at the top of the Championship, well placed to continue our push for promotion during the remainder of the season.

"The confirmation of his status as permanent manager of the club was thoroughly deserved."

It's unnecessary aggravation listening to anything these two assholes have to say.

This. I still sing along with the you FCB chants when I'm at games, but really its best just to concentrate on the goings on on the pitch.

I'm concerned that Shepherd, Moat and various American/overseas backers couldn't raise the money to buy the club even after it dropped out of the Premier. All they have achieved by haggling is to watch the price go up after every positive result.

Rather insulting that as it is the one thing that has been happening or are attendances of 40,000+ and sold out away allocations not enough.  A couple of FCB chants once we are in a comfortable position in a match is not rocking the boat.  If Ashley wants to show his commitment to the cause then let's see him back Hughton in the transfer window and not sell our best players.

However, I am sure they came out with a similar sort of claptrap this time last year pre-transfer window - wanting our patience, backing the manager, financial support etc.  We've heard the hollow promises too often now so it is up to them to prove themselves rather than the supporters.

I thought the asking price had gone down to £80m?

Jokes the lot of them.

They reduced it(allegedly) for Moat. Nobody else.

It all reminds me of that Chris Rock routine about, a certain type of person always wanting credit for stuff you're just supposed to do, 'Uh I put money into the business I bought to pay my employees wages and keep it running and stuff' - You're supposed to you dumb fuck
