You'd think Portsmouth have enough problems without their players getting shot at. Jesus.

Dont even own half of them

They'd probably get more back in compensation from insurance than what they'll get back in transfer fees anyway.

Bad shit though.  In comparison most of South Africa is safe, but there will be incidents with either the players or the fans at the World Cup, and if there are Sepp Blatter should be held personally responsible after giving them the World Cup to pamper his own ego.

Bet Adebayor didn't run the full length of the bus to celebrate in front of the gunners this time!

 Best post ever

Was wondering how far into the 'shocking'/ 'this is disgusting' posts one of these would crop up. Exceeded my expectations

That said wtf is the crack in these countries? I know things are hard and the politics corrupt but this sort of thing is absolutely incredible. Disgusting

Hard to say this without sounding insensitive, but the Togo players should be given forced leave until the end of the ANC, not just for compassionate reasons, but to stop cases where Man City play Everton with Adebayor, while Everton don't have Yobo.

Otherwise if it isn't done, I can see the likes of Phil Brown bringing the issue up in the coming months, so its probably best someone sorts this issue out now. Or better bring everyone out of Angola full stop.

As usual James, what a load of shit

How about every game they work out how many players are missing due to the ACN and force the other team to leave out the difference to make it equal. Maybe they could even have a rating system to make sure they leave out a player of equal quality

I think it's a fair comment. Man City might end up benefitting from the incident, which would be pretty unfortunate. As James says, you just know someone will bring it up if it plays a part in a club being relegated, not qualifying for Europe or whatever.

They are being paid by their clubs, they have every right to play them if they are available. What about match fitness etc..? Is it fair on the players that they have to miss a months worth of match time and then struggle to get their match fitness up when the tournament is over?

It's a mental idea.

What about teams that get knocked out of the group stages, and come home early because of that?

well you'd have to assume that the end date for Togo in the ANC is the end date for teams getting knocked out of the first round.

GeJon, the clubs pay the wages for all the players going to the ANC. They know what they are letting themselves in for when signing them and should have made the right preparations. However clubs have the assurance that their rivals are missing players too, but this incident derails the whole balance of the European leagues. Putting the players on leave would give them a chance to regain some mental composure, and protect the players from any possible controversy that some people could definitely go looking for.

Why? That's applying an artificial restriction on teams to attempt to resolve an unfairness that doesn't exist. Togo are no longer in the ACN their players should be able to play for their clubs if they wish to, you can't say that's unfair on the clubs with players who are still at the ACN, because it isn't. If Togo hadn't qualified then would you be proposing that Adebayor shouldn't play during the tournament because it was unfair on other teams? No, you wouldn't. If he'd not been selected for the squad would you be suggesting it? No, you wouldn't. If they'd have got knocked out in the first round and he'd come back to the UK, would you have suggested it? No, you wouldn't. The fact is Togo are no longer in the ACN, just because it's for an unusual and tragic reason it doesn't make any difference, if their players are fit and willing to play for their clubs then it would be wrong to stop them from doing so out of some misplaced sense of fairness.

Also, why should they be stopped from playing on "compassionate" grounds? You're not a psychiatrist, you're not qualified to say what's best for them right now and even if you were you haven't spoken with them to assess their mental state, so you'd be wrong to prescribe what they should do. Different people react to things in different ways, some will need time off, some will need to get back into their normal life asap and some will think they need the former when in fact they need the latter and vice versa. The only thing that's certain is that you don't know.

Sorry that sounds a bit aggressive, it's not meant to, but I can't be arsed to go back and rephrase it.

Yep, that was going to be my next point. Some might want time which is fair enough but some might want to get back to normal as soon as they can and try to get over it. It's not fair to let them dwell on things.

Don't agree with any of that.

What about players that don't get picked? Teams that get knocked out early? etc

Teams sign these players with the knowledge that they MAY be unavailable during this period. The fact that other teams may also have players unavailable can make the signing more acceptable but its not set in stone that they will also be unavailable.

What next ban all African players representing European teams during the month of Jan so fucking Phil Brown won't moan?!

As far as "regaining some mental composure", thats for each player to decide if they require any time off on leave unless they are considered not "medically fit" to do their job, which isn't for you to decide and each case would be dealt on an individual basis.
