No, I don't mean that.

I was referring to daft lad's good post. In it he says he has faith in Hughton to sign a new CM in the summer because we signed a new RW in Jan. My overall point being, Pancrate, Ryan Taylor, whoever, they don't have the weight around the place that Nolan does. To imply that Nolan will be replaced just because Pancrate was, is a touch naive. Completely different scenario for Hughton.

Truth be told, I would only leave Nolan out if it was our 2nd game in 3 or 4 days. Through gritted teeth i'd generally pick him to start with Guthrie but that changes the second Barton returns.

Good post, but as I said the other day, Fabrice Pancrate is far easier for Hughon to take out of the team than Kevin 'senior player' Nolan.

I agree with you there, especially in regards to the senior players having a meeting without Hughton earlier in the season, there certainly have been signs of Hughton not having control of his senior players. But I don't think a couple of senior players can mount a promotion challenge like what we've done by themselves, I'm quite certain that the players are behind Hughton. As far as Nolan being hard to drop is concerned, I'm sure if Hughton had the money to replace him, he would have. I think if we had signed that Perch lad from Nottingham he would have been first used as cover in defence and then moved into central midfield once that hole had been filled with players coming back from injury.

Parky, like Petelocky said, being manager and coach is different, Hughton was a player and then a coach and has had interraction with a proffessional manager for 40 years. However watching and doing is a completely different thing. You can watch porn for years but still be no good at shagging, in the same way,  you can be a player and be a coach and be managed/watch a club be managed for 40 years, but still be no good at it until you refine your managering skills on the job.

This is the critical point to me. If Barton comes back and hasn't been given a decent chance by the end of the season and we're still playing Nolan / Smith, i'd be far more withering in my assessment of Hughton, but until Hughton has actually had the opportunity to replace Nolan with someone potentially a lot better, i'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I also agree with Ronaldo. I'm actually quite surprised to see people defending Nolan's fitness. It's pretty clear to me that he is not as fit as he should be.

That's the difference a few wins (and a goal) makes. We'll see a different set of opinions soon.

I don't think anyone on here will be happy to see Smith and Nolan as our central midfield pairing at the start of the next season. Ideally we'd all like a creative central midfielder who can bring some mobility to our central midfield. Howver credit is due where credit is due, Nolan's goals DID get us a hell of a lot of points, and if it weren't for his goals we'd be much lower down the table. From what I've seen of Nolan, he doesn't get involved as much as he should beause his general lack of mobility however when he does get on the ball he's an intelligent player.

So there Nolan's a shit premierleague player due to his lack of mobility, but down here in the championship I think he did a decent job despite looking like shit.

Now I'm sure everyone on here, including Hughton would rather have Kaka in our central midfield than Nolan, but lets be honest, Chris Hughton has had to severely cut our wage bill whilst trying to build our paper-thin squad to last the season and mount a promotion challenge. I think he's done quite well. Yes Hughton hasn't dropped Nolan much this seaon, but let me ask you this, who would you have rather played? I mean Barton was injured, lets not even talk about Butt. That leaves us with, Guthrie, Smith and Nolan who we've seen a lot of this season. More often than not when Smith and Nolan was paired, it was when one of our wingers were injured and Guthrie had to be moved out to the wing. If we had a certain Kaka sitting on our bench, and yet Hughton was insisting on Nolan starting in central mid, I'd be calling for his head too. Yeah he's dogshit but he's the best we've got and he's done an alright job. I think Hughton has done well with the shit he has.

Yes we'd like to have signed a central midfielder but, in the January transfer window Hughton signed a right winger, 2 back up centre halves, a left back on loan and a back up strike. I think that's good activity for one transfer window, and he did this while spending hardly any money at all. Priority was filling the gaping hole left by Taylor and Enrique getting injured, and he's done that well.

My faith in Hughton signing a better cental midfielder before next season lies entirely in the Wayne Routledge transfer. Noone here expected Hughton to sign a player like Routledge, everyone could see that our team was unbalanced with all our attacks coming from our left, we all thought Hughton was a daft prick who couldn't see this and would settle with Pancrate, it was just one of those things which we fans could see but the manager just didn't seem able to. How often have you felt that way since Sir Bobby left? I've felt that way many times, where our problems were so blatant but the manager didn't address them or just didn't seem to know. Well Hughton did see it and he signed Routledged which has drastically improved our squad. Because of this transfer I believe he's not as stupid as many people think he is, and I believe he will sign a central midfielder.

I also think Hughton is learning is trade and is improving, like our later games he's been fielding a slightly more offensive team, I think he's actually a better manager now than he was when he was our caretaker in the premierleague.

His experience in the Premier League previously doesn't mean it'll go the same way. If (when) you go up, surely the confidence levels from storming the Championship will be much higher than a disillusioned bunch of wasters slipping further down and down the Premier League last year?

It isn't all perfect but I honestly don't think you need much more to survive next year. Hughton is still relatively inexperienced being in charge of a club but he's learning. Give him a chance.

The problem with Nolan for me is that he shows no interest at all in getting on the ball in midfield, not that he's unfit.

His instinct is to get forward and try and get on the end of knockdowns from long balls, which is a major reason why we've been so "direct" all year. He's quite a clever player and a decent finisher, which is why he'll get you goals, but he's a complete hindrance to any team attempting to play the ball forward on the deck.

Allardyce's Bolton was the perfect setup for him. Two central midfielders beside him that allowed him to get forward all the time, big target man CF to help create chances for him. In a 4-4-2, however, he leaves far too much on the plate of his partner in the middle of the park.

and it's not often you can say that about Nolan.

Nolan is clearly unfit, he's blowing out of his arse after about ten minutes. And that's the reason he struggles in midfield, has to take a breather and plod around for spells. Looks better when playing behind the striker as he can hide (for want of a better word, not saying he's a shirker) a bit easier. And Guthrie isn't fit enough either.

This is the thing man, I can't believe so many are willing to completely ignore it.

i don't think anyone is ignoring as much as disagreeing with you. he is our only midfielder who gets forward and gets through more work then our other midfielders. if his fitness is a disgrace then lets hear you slag off guthrie and smith in stronger terms as they get through less.

Whilst Nolan often comes under a certain level of criticism from me, I don't think he does any less than 2/3 out of the other 3/4 we usually have in Midfield. The only person who does more is usually Gutierrez (out of those who play their regularly).

I also think he is one of the biggest and best presences in terms of organisation and building team morale.

Can't remember if it was an interview with Carroll or Taylor but whoever it was said Nolan was the hardest worker in training.

Was in one of the match day programmes.

Perhaps he works so over the top hard in training he's really tired once it's time to play a real match.

I'm sorry, but come on. This is Steven Taylor who spent 4 months licking Kinnear's arse in the local media then later went out of his way to make Shearer look like a godsend compared to old Joe. He's the biggest bullshiter to ever set foot in NE1.

How about, Obafemi I will stay at this club so long as Sam Allardyce is in Charge, Sam Allardyce was hindering my game, I will stay with Newcastle until we win a premiership, Joe Kinnear has revived our team we are all behind him, then fucked off to Wolfsburg Martins?

I don't think we can really blame Oba. It's not his fault that he's the thickest clown to ever pull on the shirt.

Bit harsh considering the average IQ of a footballer isn't much over double figures - or maybe it just seems like that listening to them, and reading about their adventures...

I couldn't fault his starting 11, it was a massive relief to see Butt wasn't getting a start ahead of Guthrie who was as good as anybody we've had through the middle this season.
