Why would he even come here when he's doing a great job at Fulham, and they seem to be getting better each year.

No chance.

"We've just beaten Juventus, we're in the last 8 of the Europa League against all odds. We're about to play Wolfsburg in the next round and we've got a pretty decent chance of qualifying for Europe again.

Fuck this, I fancy a new challenge."

Aye. Nailed on.

Bigger club, bigger fan base.  If he can turn Fulham from a relegation side to a team in europe in double quick time then i think he would fancy his chances with us.  Most likely will never happen.

  • 3 weeks later...

Didnt McClaren also went on an awesome run in the UEFA Cup before being exposed as rubbish...I remember his tactics when Boro was trailing seems to be just throw in an additional striker, at one point they were playing with 4-5 strikers!

Don't think success in the UEFA Cup proves anything

To be fair the sides Fulham have knocked out are much more impressive than Boro. McClaren was decent at Boro aswell not just in Eruope.

If you look at his CV and what he achieved at clubs relative to where they were when he joined, it is on the whole outstanding:

Successes:

1976 Halmstad - relegation contenders to League winners 1976 and 1979

1985 Malmo - 5 league titles

1990 Neuchatel Xamax - beat Celtic and Real Madrid in Europe with a team that has only twice won the Swiss league.

1992 Switzerland - qualified for 1994 World Cup losing only 1 game in a qualification group containing Italy and Portugal. Qualified for Euro 96 and got Switzerland to 3rd in the World.

1995 Inter Milan - Got a bad Inter team to 3rd and the UEFA Cup Final

2000 Copenhagen - Took a team from 7th to Champions

2004 Viking - Relegation threatened to 5th and UEFA Cup, beating Monaco.

2006 Finland - Best ever qualification performance.

2007 Fulham - Relegation certainties to UEFA Cup Semi.

Failures:

1982 Bristol City caretaker of broke club

1997 Blackburn 13th to 6th but then left at bottom of table in December 2008 after £20m spent

To be fair Boro beat the mighty Basle, Steaua as well as Stuttgart & Roma while Fulham have consistently faced good teams.

Woy should be the next England manager imo

Eh? Really?

Never would've thought that.

McClaren looked a witless chump at England, but he's not the first manager to fail in that job. Much like our (well my) own Sir Graham Taylor.

He did well at Boro and is doing well in Holland. You can't really argue with that.

If only he didn't make himself look such a total twat with such frequency.

The FIFA rankings are a load of rubbish though.  You usually see that Mexico and the US up in the 10s all of the time.

Anyhow, IIRC Switzerland came last in the group.  We (Scotland) won 1-0 against them with a superb Ally McCoist volley at Villa Park.

We also lost 2-0, thanks to 'that goal' that Gazza scored.
