Wearside- can you tell me how many times Sunderland have been relegated in the last 20 years?

genuine question.

In the last 20 years they have been relegated 4 times, all from the top league, in 1991, 1997, 2003 & 2006.

In my 25 year NUFC supporting lifetime I have witnessed them be relegated a further 2 times to add to those 4, in 1985 when they were relegated from the old 1st divison and then, the funniest of them all, the 1987 relegation to the old 3rd division. I was at the game V Gillingham at Joker Park which relegated them to the 3rd, along with another 2000 mags in the clock stand paddock. It's still a very, very sore wound for them to live with even to this very day.

I was at the Gillingham game as well. Tremendous game with the perfect end. Couldn't get in the clock stand so went in the Roker End. I actually stood in the same spot for the no away fans game years later.

Just as  embarassing as Sunderland fans calling ours Sid James park

Think he's on about the bloke being there. Which is pretty sad tbh.

I despair at our some of our modern support, I really do. You weren't following NUFC before 1992 were you?

I stood in the same spot too for the 1st leg of the 1990 play offs. Was a very different situation that time though as there weren't as many mags in the paddock and I couldn't manage to get in amongst the ones that were so I had to stand with the mackems as they sang "Spot The Mag". There were some seriously psychotic looking ones too and they were looking all around as they sang it. I wasn't taking any chances so I sang it too, LOL.

i'd imagine many mackems would be at SJP if they could get tickets and we were in that same position.

Exactly. It was the gravity of the situation that led to the NUFC invasion. They had never been relegated to the 3rd in their history so to witness it was to be something special.

It's obvious that a lot of our younger supporters have no idea of what football was like in the 1970s & 80's.

To give you a clue : From a supporters point of view it was infinitely better than the sanitised, dumbed down, over hyped sh*te nowadays.

I couldn't give a fuck enough about Sunderland to pay to go to their ground and watch them play at all, let alone in the the second tier, sorry. I'm not a Geordie though, so I suppose it doesn't matter as much to me what they get up to if it doesn't involve us in some way. In 1992 I was nine years old so before that I wasn't following NUFC, no. I apologise for my year of birth though. Not quite sure what it's got to do with the 70s and 80s either.

No offence mate, and I'm not looking for an argument here, but that explains a lot. If your not from up here and have no real experience of the history of the animosity between the two sets of supporters, especially before the "modern" age of football then you aren't really qualified to say that attending their stadium to goad them in the worst moment in their history is "sad".

The Gillingham end was packed with Newcastle fans that day. Different era tbh not as many home comforts as we enjoy today so a night watching your rivals getting sent down to there lowest level was good night out for many. Bit sad you saying its sad when you clearly have no understanding of how things were during that time.

fwiw, I'm a Geordie, and I wouldn't dream of going to watch Sunderland play, especially if it was to watch them go down. Unbelievably sad as fuck, and the type of thing I rip the piss out of them for doing.

As I said I think it was more of era thing. 4 TV stations, net not widely, available so people thought instead of going to the social club to play 5 & 3s they would go to Roker Park instead. I wouldn't expect you to get it tbh.

Go back a bit further in history & loads of fans used to watch both clubs. Something I cant understand but again different era.

I posted this after you quoted me "Go back a bit further in history & loads of fans used to watch both clubs. Something I cant understand but again different era."

It sort of highlights how one generation does not understand another.

Yeah, no doubt. I cannot fathom it at all, on any level tbh.

So it basically comes down to you lot being ancient, and not having a mountain of porn available at the click of a mouse

No mass coverage of football on TV either. ITV showing 1 game of live football every 2/3 weeks!!!! Every play off game is covered now.
