It's like they have a real problem about signing a striker.

Exceptions like Ba aside, they cost good money. Simple as that.

Aye, it's seems acceptable to sign a midfielder for 3-6m but they can't justify paying 10m for a good striker, which is the going rate for anyone half decent.

No stiker coming in this window,,,,

take from NUFC.com

Latest quotes from Alan Pardew, Wednesday:

"I don't think we'll be bringing in a striker in this window after the collapse of (Modibo) Maiga which we put a lot of work into, so I think as far as we're concerned, we'll go with what we've got.

Asked if there was any chance of resurrecting any form of deal for the Sochaux forward:

"No, that wasn't a strategy to do that, it was just unfortunate. These things happen and we'll have to do a lot of work between now and the summer to locate another striker.

"You have to pay over the odds if you want to invest in this window but we won't be in for a striker.

"We need to bring in a defender."

31st January 2011, we sell Andy Carroll and are left with Shola, Best, Lovenkrands and Ranger to see the season out.  The club is vaguely apologetic but makes noises that it's a lot of money and the search for a replacement has began.

Summer 2011, we sign Demba Ba on a free, Ranger falls out of the picture and so does Lovenkrands to a lesser extent.  We're left with Ba, Shola, Best and fit-again but rusty Ben Arfa as realistic first team options after failing to sign a handful of strikers to go with Ba including Maiga.

Pre-January 2012, Maiga deal falls through and Pardew says we're not signing another striker in January.

Summer 2012 and it'll be 18 months we've been looking at strikers and no doubt we'll be humming and harring over any player that costs more than a couple of million. It's taking the p*ss now man ffs, they've obviously took an educated gamble on Ba and now that it's came off they're willing to stick with it and play substandard reserves when the inevitable suspensions, injuries, ACN departees affect our squad.

I expected this tbf but the excuses they wheel out are tiresome.  Nobody's expecting them to spend a fortune but it's frustrating that we only need a little bit of investment to push on.  The recent poor run of form mustn't have woken them up to our lack of squad depth whatsoever.

Fingers crossed we sign a centre half then.

Yup.

Still not spent that 35 million or have we ? :yao:

Oh wait free players are not free!

Some of that 35 million went on Tiotes new contract

We will search for a new striker in january

January is but 4 days away

"I don't think we'll be bringing in a striker in this window after the collapse of (Modibo) Maiga deal"  :fuuu:

Unless Coloccini is leaving, with Williamson back there's no reason for us to sign a brilliant centre half IMO. A younger player or someone solid that can just fill in better than Simpson or Perch (not too difficult) would suffice, another Williamson if you like. There's no way we can't afford a striker as well. Instead of looking at this start to the season and imagining what we could do with the mountains of cash remaining from the last 12 months of player sales, they're just looking at the minimum we can get away with.

We're one game away from halfway through the season, and currently we stand one point behind 6th, three points behind 5th and four points behind a Champions League place. There's the basis of a really good team here already. Fucking dream a little.

We could have got Long or Graham in the summer for less than Maiga. Both would have significantly improved on the quality of our options.

The board just seem moronic. I reckon Carr provided a list of options with a summary, they chose the one that appealed to them most and binned the rest.

It's getting ridiculous now. Hopefully we will manage to locate another forward by the time Ba has retired or been sold.

You'd like to think that the decent season we're having would have perked a few imagination buds in the ole boardroom.

Newcastle United abandon striker hunt after Modibo Maiga move collapse

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/16345791.stm

Newcastle will lose 14-goal Demba Ba, who plays for Senegal, to Africa Cup of Nations duty in the coming weeks.

It will leave the Magpies with Leon Best, Shola and Sammy Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands as the only strikers in the first-team squad.

Mint.  Luckily Harper's back up north, he used to want to be a striker, didn't he?

We are being mugged again, before Taylor got injured we needed a striker and a LB now we need a striker, LB and a CB.

Its crazy not to even attempt to try and sign a striker are they honestly expecting us to believe they only had one target in mind and when that deal failed due to his medical we had no other options.

BOLLOCKS as soon as Taylor got injured we were never going to spend money on Miaga, the money for him now has to go on a CB, thats not the right way to do it.

Invest more fucking money in signings, we are not asking for an extra £20m but enough to get us what we need.

i've said all i need to say on the board, they're people who base every single decision on getting a 'deal' and the team comes second in every way.

that said i think a really good attacking left back could transform our side so if we come out of the window with one of those and a centre half (and dont sell anyone good) i'll be happy

It's almost like they're scared of success. Finish too high and the expectation is there to invest and push on.

They're that used to doing things on a shoestring that they don't know how to react now we've had a great start to the season. They're either unable or unwilling to capitalise on it. Fuck knows why. If the money isn't there then fair enough, no-one wants us to spend money we've not got, but there was cash available for Maiga so why just give up? Was it Maiga or no-one?

Ah, fuck it. Not going to get worked up about it. :hmm:

the attraction with Maiga was that we'd unsettled him to the point where he wouldnt play for Sochaux anymore and therefore we were getting him at a cut price deal, if there's no-one else available at what is seen as a bargain, we wont get anyone

i honestly think our incoming transfers involve carr telling ashley how much he reckons a player will be worth after at least a season in the premier league, and the decision is based on that. it's not colocho's 300% but it's the one constant in our transfer dealings, cut price deals for players that we can sell for more if someone takes a liking to them. it's business sense but it doesnt cater specifically for the teams needs.

Bit misleading that mind, would say Ben Arfa's one of our strikers now by the looks of it but at the same time Sammy generally plays nowhere but on the wing.

So Pardew has been told it's either a striker or defender. FFS what's wrong with buying both???

Same old s*** from this board, dear oh dear. We'll be walking a tight rope a la centre back situation the first half of the season. What is wrong with this board, christ.

Midds - the Carroll money should still be there, should it not? Unless of course it has left the club by now for places unknown...... When are the club accounts due again?

Last year they came out 1st April, expect something similar this time around. We already know from Llambias' public utterances that an operating loss of around £4-5m was recorded- although not expressly confirmed this figure is usually pre-player trading. The club should be recording a sizable profit- but I will be far more interested to 'follow the money' and see changes in the club's cash posistion.

Harry Redknapp has run the rule over NUFC stars Tim Krul and Cheick Tiote ahead of the January sales.

The Chronicle can reveal that Harry Redknapp dispatched his chief scout Ian Broomfield to the Reebok Stadium on Boxing Day to keep an eye on the pair’s progress.

And he did not leave disappointed as both players put in solid performances in the 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers.

Who fucking knows mate, who knows? It's come into the club in January, we only spent about £5m (net, taking into account the agents fees and all) over the summer and we're getting 50k+ through the doors again. I assume most of the money is still there somewhere but we can't be sure.

Some of the reactions to the striker 'news' on here are ridiculous. We had Modibo Maiga ready to sign, everything was agreed and then he fails his medical. What is the club suppossed to do at this point? From some people's reactions on here they want a return to the past where we panic buy and spend £10m+ on a striker who we clearly don't know nearly enough about to justify spending that much money.

Yes, it is frustrating but people need to realise the other circumstances in play. We've found out we need to find a new striker target less than a month before the January transfer window opens. By the sounds of it we've had Maiga as a nearly done deal for some months so we've not been actively pursuing other strikers in that period. So we're left scrambling to find a player to try and sign in a ridiculously short period of time. On top of that even if we identify a player we like we then have to pursuade the club to sell, agree a fee (which because its January will be several million over the price we'd pay in summer) and then agree terms with the player.

Frankly I think it is a thoroughly sensible approach being taken by the club. We're not in any danger of relegation and we have Ba, Ben Arfa, Best, Amoebi, Lovenkrands who can all play upfront. Better to save our money and get someone who we really want in the summer than panic buy in January.
