James Perch

Here's one of the most reasoned responses, or as the guy himself says - rational opinion. Doesn't really make for inspiring reading, but the very reason he never played so consistently may be that he was played in so many positions. Clutching at straws with fingers crossed.

Now, let's see, the one thing this thread is missing is a rational opinion, so...

First of all, a confession, I'm not a James Perch hater. Whatever your opinions of his abilities, or lack thereof, he has not been without his merits. He came through the ranks at Forest as a centre-back, and in a foreshadowing of the versatile role he would take for us, was thrown into the first team as a right-back by Joe Kinnear in the midst of an injury crisis.

He probably had his best run of form under Gary megson though, as a central midfield player. He was highly consistant during this time and Megson declared him 'the best midfielder at the club', however this high praise was tempered somewhat by the sheer amount of rubbish in the squad under the ginger whinger.

Under subsequent managers he was moved around and under Calderwood was often deployed as a right-winger, where he was less consistant and started to become scapegoated by a good number of fans. It was around this time that comments such as 'He's not a winger', 'He's not a midfielder' etc started to surface and many demanded he be moved to right-back where it was felt he would be in his 'best position'. However an unfortunate run of injuries and players coming into the side in his absence meant that Perch never quite re-established himself and got a run as he had done under Megson.

Whilst he's clearly lacking in flair and creativity, he's a scarily good tackler and capable of being outstanding in big games, as he was against Newcastle, but his lack of consistancy means he can also have a mare, such as the home play-off agianst Blackpool. He's a good professional away fromt eh pitch though and, despite growing up around the unsavoury characters that were profligate under Kinnear, has never been one of the names associated with loutish, drunken behaviour in Nottingham and has held the captains armband.

With 190 appearances for Forest under his belt, he's perhaps not afforded the same level of tolerance that many 24 year old players are with regards to our analysis of his performances, bearing in mind that most defenders don't peak until they're close to 30, so he still has a lot of potential.

However, with all that said, he's not worth £1million and if that's what Newcastle have offered, then it would seem a move motivated by (and a price inflated by) that stunning performance against Newcastle.

Very sound analysis. In our last season in League One, he was strongly linked with a £2.5 million move to Sunderland. There's probably not a better last ditch tackler around, but whether that's become a necessity owing to poor positional sense, or just being exposed by his team mates has never really become apparent. I think there are a few positives to be found. He's unlikely to be a first teamer, he is versatile, has a fantastic work ethos (he just knuckles down and gets on with it - will never be in the media, which makes it easier for fans to scapegoat him I guess), and his time at Forest has coincided with the worst period in our history (just like Wes Morgan, who has managed to establish himself with the fans after a torrid time). It's hard to get a clear picture of Perch simply because he's either been injured or moved about so much, and it is because of this that his last few months with us has become so prominent in fans' evaluations of him. Forest also have a history of not getting the best out of certain players, but we're also generally fairly good at developing youth. Basically, I don't think he will succeed, but I hope he does, and while the evidence may generally be against him, he at least gets to start with low expectation.

He looks scarily like Routledge

Not meant as a racist comment at all but Houghton seems to prefer players that have the same skin tone as him, Routledge, Simpson, Best and now Perch.

Surely this can only mean one thing?

Good signing. You can never have enough utility players imo.

Exactly. If you combine him with Ryan Taylor and Alan Smith, Newcastle have real versatile and dynamic side. Looking forward to it.

Hall and van Aanholt.

He does like his fairskinned black players, it seems. It's an indictment of how hard it is to watch Championship matches that I never realised van Aanholt was black until just now.

meh, we had exactly the same thing with routledge did we not? a fan on here telling us he definitely wouldnt do anything for our team, and he certainly did. give the lad a chance, i wouldnt take any notice of what forest fans say because we do exactly the same thing when we sell players, i.e. look for as many reasons as possible why its good to get rid.

remember the deportivo fans reaction when they sold xisco to us

I was just thinking this. I still think we were right to sell Milner, even though most people now seem to think he's world class.

incidentally so do i, you've got to speak as you find and 12m for him, the way he'd performed for us, was staggering. had it been invested it would have been a great deal, but we all know what happened.

woo.. A SIGNING!!

Very pleased with it.. He may well have played his best game against us, but it's evident he's a good tackler and has decent pace and workrate. It would be interesting if we try him out as a holding midfielder, without ever seeing him play there, I'd bet he's a better option than Smith..

It certainly will be interesting to hear Hughton's plans for Perch i.e. what they envision his main position being. Would be good if we didn't move him around quite as much as Forest did, and instead gave him more of a chance to master one position and hopefully excel at it.

Signed him just so Ranger would have somewhere to hangout.

One would think his place in the team is useful bench player who can come in the team and fulfill several roles. I doubt he has been signed to start and I would be worried if that were the case.

Also, it is rather good to see I am not the only Aiyegbeni hater on the forum.

I don't mind versatile players as long as they only move around when needed because of injuries. They should always focus on their best position IMO.
