The other games today - 2010/11

The ref gave the advantage to Gomes to keep the game flowing and Spurs were in a good position to get a quick break on which was the right decision. I'd expect every ref to ask the keeper simply to play on and keep the game going without a free-kick being taken. Gomes then fucks up by dropping the ball in front of him and appearing to take a free-kick, he should have just got rid of it. The ref fucks up by just allowing it to happen an not bringing it back once Nani puts it in the net. Common sense says that it shouldn't, in the spirit of the game, be allowed to stand. He then has another chance to speak to his linesman to get it right and fails to get it right again.

Both Clattenburg and Gomes are at fault. I can see why it was allowed but it's not the right way to go about things.

very well put

So have I got this right?

Nani dives for a pen, and grabs the ball. Ref waves it away, doesn't book him for diving or for a deliberate handball - Gomes presumes it's a free kick and the ball must be out of play seeing as Nani's held the ball. Gomes puts the ball down, Nani makes a miracle recovery from writhing on the floor like he was going to die and runs over to the ball. Gomes asks the ref what's going on, the ref makes a vague gesture with his hands like "Go on". Gomes is like "What? Take the kick? He's standing next to the ball." Nani puts it in the net and celebrates. Linesman flags. Ref discusses it with the linesman, with Ferdinand about 6 inches from his face intimidating him, ref overrules the linesman and gives the goal.

Exactly, the last bit you highlighted was the part I hated the most. The ref waved away Spurs players presumably so that he can discuss with the linesman properly but then just continued discussing whilst Ferdinand harassing him right in the face. Ridiculous double standards. Don't get me wrong, I hate Spurs especially with slappy face in charge but Man United get so many fucking favours from refs, its fucking unreal!

Game was over tbh. Spurs played as though they were facing an abusive parent from their past in the second half. Totally bottled it second half - disappointing, because though I don't like them, they have come such a long way and could have really troubled a (relatively) ordinary Man Utd side.

Just seen this for the first time, technically you could argue Gomes was cheating by trying to gain an unfair advantage by putting the ball down about 10 yards further forward than the original handball incident if he honestly thought it was a free-kick.

My head's gonna explode. Stop it!

No he didn't. He shrugged his shoulders. Since when has a shrug of the shoulders been the sign for play on? play on is when the ref puts both arms out infornt and Clattenburg never did that once. The ref has to give a clear indication/sign that he's waving play on so the player understands fully. A shrug of the shoulders is not play on.

Pretty fair assessment really.

Also why is it that all our players are told to go away but Rio Ferdinand is allowed to stay?

Just rewatched the incident and I have to say it's actually quite interesting how the ref waves away all the Spurs players but engage in conversation with Rio.

I dislike your team, but you guys were robbed yesterday from the perspective that at 1-0 and still couple of mi nutes to go you could've scored. The ref killed the game with is outrageous decision.

People blaming Gomes must be crazy, just like I saw on the footages and like Gomes said, the ref put his whistle in his mouth but never blew. I think the ref might have thought that Gomes had touched the ball with his feet or so and therefore let it go. Because he clearly demonstrated that it was a freekick and Clattenburg is fucking shit.

I would never allow him to ref another football game, ref can't keep making these stupid decisions.

Why is Carr three times faster than when he was with us?

Watched him in the game against Liverpool a while back, he was fast as fuck!

Just sawr this report from the scoreless draw at Villa Park:

With the ball flying out of play a Villa fan rises like a salmon to head it back on to the field of play - collapsing over the advertising hoarding as a result. Hilarity ensues, until the stewards react by escorting him out of the ground. Harsh. Especially as that's just about the best thing that's happened in this match so far.
