Vuckic looks stronger and can find a pass better in midfield, plus he has the pace and strength to make a difference as a forward.

And with Gosling, he's a much better option as backup than Smith and Guthrie, who are poor players. Gosling is going to improve as well.

What evidence is there to support this view?

ALAN Pardew is set to make Hatem Ben Arfa his first signing as Newcastle United manager next week after the Frenchman agreed to make his loan move permanent in the January transfer window.

 

Ben Arfa was initially expected to make a decision on his future at the end of the season, but Newcastle have decided they saw enough of him in his four appearances before breaking his leg against Manchester City in October to offer him a long term contract.

 

Pardew has never had a good look at Ben Arfa in training and has never seen him play live in a Premier League match, but the United boss was already aware of his ability when he arrived at St James’s Park earlier this month.

 

The signing of the 23-year-old will mean Pardew has been successful in all three of his top priorities this month, firstly in persuading the board to let him spend some money in January, secondly in persuading Steven Taylor to sign a new contract and now the permanent signing of Ben Arfa.

 

The Journal understands Newcastle will land Ben Arfa for the fee - thought to be in the region of £3.5m - they agreed to pay Marseille in the summer if he played 25 games this season. Given the impressive start he made in black and white stripes, that would appear to be an excellent piece of business.

 

Like the recent deals offered to Taylor, Andy Carroll, Mike Williamson and Nile Ranger, as well as Pardew, Ben Arfa is expected to sign a five-and-a-half year contract when the paperwork is finalised in the New Year.

 

Liverpool have also expressed some

 

interest in the playmaker, but Newcastle remain in the driving seat as he thoroughly enjoyed his time on Tyneside before his injury nightmare and remembers how patient they were in their negotiations with Marseille in the summer.

 

Encouragingly, Ben Arfa (pictured right) has also made an excellent recovery from the double fracture he picked up as a result of an ugly lunge by City’s Nigel De Jong in the game at Eastlands and could be playing again in February.

 

The youngster has been able to begin light training at a specialist rehabilitation centre in France and is due back at Newcastle’s training ground next month even though it was initially thought he would not feature again until April at the earliest.

£3.5m would be a bargain!

 

I hope he's learning English during his recovery.

Wonder what they are all thinking? Pardew, Taylor, Ranger, HBA all on five and a half year deals - end of the world after that?

 

Max contract lenght which can be offered accoriding to the rules! I thought it was 5 years but I guess that half a yer can be added there to make sure the contract doesn't expire middle of the season.

 

There was some speculation at one point that we would have to like 10 million and now it's 3,5 so which is the truth? I guess 6 million after 25 games was the figure when he first arrived here, right?

Why sign a player in Jan, that we had already agreed to sign at the end of the season.

 

Not that i'm un happy about the signing just seams strange considering his injury and the fact nobody has a clue how it will effecct him.

 

Now we have spent this money, will ther be any more ?

IIRC We had only agreed to sign him at the end of the season considering he'd played 25 games.

 

He had his leg broke, which means he's unlikely to play 25 games considering there's only 19 games of the season left. Obviously the little that was seen from him was enough to impress therefore surely worth the risk?

I'm sure the club doctors will know how well the leg break has recovered, how good his rehab programme was etc etc. This is Ashley we're talking about 5 million to him is a hell of a lot. He isn't just going to spunk it.
