Mikky
In all fairness to Southgate (and I'm no fan of his) he hardly has a wealth a talent to pick from: PL is just full of bang average English footballers;
54
A fully fit first 11 isnt actually that bad: Shit keeper Walker Stones Lascelles Rose Dier Wilshere Sterling Lallana Rashford Kane Its just the everything around them thats utterly average/ shit. Kanj
I like Ox, Delli or Lingard as the #10...Sterling and Rashford wide make sense to me too from pure pace and performance.
Infinitely Content
Looking at the likes of Livermore & Cook, you can't blame someone for wondering why the far more talented Shelvey isn't in there, but it's all a bit meh really isn't it. Southgate probably has a defensive approach in mind and doesn't see Shelvey as someone who fits that as well as Cook for instance (although I disagree). It's good to see Tarkowski in though, could have just as easily have been our captain but either way it's good to see a lesser known lad who hasn't been involved in past England setups included
Incognito
What exaclty is Joe Gomez's point in the squad? He's been pretty good in a back 3 to be fair to him.

Aye played well last match. --- More broadly you could probably put a rolling paper between Tarkowski, Mawson and Lascelles this season and all will probably struggle more not playing in a defence focused side. Agreed. Out of curiosity, do you consider Maguire to be better or worse than that group then?

toontownman
Would have loved to have seen both Shelvey and Lascelles in there. I think they both deserve it. That is through rose tinted specs though. Lascelles was likely the more deserving but there is a lot of competition. I think its a bit silly not to have taken him to have a look though, that is what friendlies are for. He is a great leader and very vocal. Maybe he would add something different in the dressing room and squad. Guess we won't know now until after the world cup. Shelvey still has a lot to prove in terms of discipline and 3 great performances don't really make up for a lot of ill disciplined and poor ones. While Jamaal is the more deserving of the two Shelvey is till the more likely to get on the plane. Simply because he offers something different to our other midfield options I think he is still in with a shot for the summer but that will depend entirely on keeping his form consistent and improving from now until season end. leffe186
Southgate is off his face looking at those names. Which ones in particular? I have to ask who you'd rather play? We're just not great in general.
Hanshithispantz
Hopefully Lascelles continues to be missed and Mawson, Maguire or Tarkowski are sniffed out in the summer instead. England have quite a few good no nonsense defenders if they continue as they have.

Agreed. Out of curiosity, do you consider Maguire to be better or worse than that group then? Neither better nor worse really. He's definitely better on the ball but he's always looked a bit shaky positionally for me. Depends what you value as the manager. Unless playing a centre back 3 I think I'd always subscribe to the Vidic/Puyol (stopper) Ferdinand/Pique (sweeper) style duo. On the plus side for us in the short-term the chances of Lascelles getting crocked is diminished.

We're just not great in general. Livermore, Welbeck and Lallana are the ones I scoffed at most. I'm pretty sure there are other lesser-known players who'd fit the bill who've played more and played better. If you're taking a midfielder from the team rock bottom of the league, bang on to go down, we must really be in trouble.
Disco
Livermore hasn't even been playing regularly this year. Not that El Rey's judgements on a player mean owt.

I'm possibly making that up, but he's been out for ages hasn't it? It's the old-age England thing of the squad picking itself.
Nexumaster
Livermore hasn't even been playing regularly this year. Not that El Rey's judgements on a player mean owt. Yeah. Either way you look at it, he's a shocking inclusion. I'm not even saying it because I think Newcastle players should be in there, and I can't say who else I'd put in as I don't know other team's squads well enough - but I find it hard to believe he's a hot pick from any angle. samptime29
The Livermore and Welbeck picks are shocking. Really bad. Livermore plays for bottom of the table team, 3 wins all season, he's scored 0 goals, had 1 assist. Welbeck only recently playing in Europa league, is in terrible form, and isn't scoring. Shite from Southgate.
