Can't understand why he has such a hard on for our shittest players. Alan Smith last season (thank god he got over him), now Loven this season, who has pointlessly been on every bench we've fielded this season.

I don't remember the Alan Smith thing...

Well, he played him against WBA <_< Anyone who has followed us wouldn't let Alan Smith anywhere near the god damn stadium never mind the pitch.

Hughton played Smith in more league games than Pardew did last season.

There was no 'Smith thing' at all.

He was the only central midfielder on the bench that day, and replaced Leon Best who had just come back from his op on his foot or whatever it was that he injured.

To be fair to Hughton, Smith did _incredibly_ well against Aston Villa in the 6-0. But whatever, I'll concede that :p

Still can't deny that he fucking loves Loven for some reason.

Poor subs, but (rightly or wrongly) it was clear that he was attempting to protect the likes of HBA and Santon.

It could have cost us the game, but didn't. We had our rub of the green but we played very well in the first half and got three points at a stadium where we've only won like twice before in the past (forget the statistic).

Satisfied. First half performance outshines second half disappointment.

I really, really hope you're right. But from what we've seen there's absolutely no evidence for that.

Didn't see the game today but he hasn't got much wrong all season. Sounds like a couple of substitutions weren't particularly great decisions, but we've come through with three points having protected some of the big names. From BBC it sounded like Wolves were flying into tackles on numerous occasions during the first half.

Look, he apparently wanted to hold on to the lead. It made us vulnerable and tired the players quicker as Wolves attacked more and more. They had a legitimate penalty turned down and it was almost sheer luck they didn't score a second, which would have been a third had that penalty been given.

We played pretty much the same game at QPR and got away with a draw by the skin of our teeth and looked poor into the bargain. Today could have easily been a loss and we looked dire at times in that second half.

He's the manager, and if he can't work out what is quite plain to us - that makes us all wrong and he's got it right?

Cabaye was close to fucked and had all but lost any semblance of running the midfield, but that was due to Pardews 2nd half gameplan imo. Had he brought Marveaux or Ben Arfa on the moment Ba took that knock everyone in the team would have had an outlet to aim for and relieve pressure, regaining momentum in attack.

Guthrie was the correct decision once Cabaye had peaked, but it never needed to happen imo. When Ba got that bad knock he should have made two changes there and then.

Given that the QPR game and West Brom last year has apparently taught him nothing I'm sad to say we won't maintain anything like this position in the table once the season starts getting tricky.

We were always going to come under the cosh in the second half, we held out (just) and have had a spectacular start to the season. Two week break now, let's prepare for that.

What a f***ing c***.  Nearly cost us two points with his s*** subs. We are third in spite of this arsehole.

Serious?

Yes.  We are playing well because of the players that our scouts found.  Not because we have been leaving Barfa on the bench and playing Lovenkrands ahead of plenty of much better players.

What on earth are you on about man? Stop polluting the forum with absolute drivel at every attempt.

So you agree with the subs then?  Or are yo just insulting me for shits and giggles?

Lovenkrands and Shola being anywhere near the side is a constant reminder that we should have brought another 1 or 2 bodies in.  Still crossing my fingers that we don't get any injuries in defence and that Santon doesn't suffer any more setbacks.  We're going well atm but we need to hope our best players stay fit.

Someone said in the Tottenham thread that Santon won't start a game until we lose, and I sort of agree with him. It would be great if Pardew was the sort of manager who will shape the team instead of waiting for the results to go wrong but I don't think he is. We need changes for the Spurs game IMO but I doubt we'll get them. Not trying to put a downer on a flying start but the Spuds game is another level, and we are capable of winning it with the right approach.

Focus on the positives. Another great performance at a place we usually struggle at.

Fantastic start to the season, no doubt about that.

Just for the sake of adding some balance to this, we did have two or three good chances in the second half, one of which in particular should have seen us taking a 3-0 lead. So it wasn't that negative a performance until the last 20 mins really.

We did very little at all in the 2nd half and the ball wouldn't stick up front.  We were crying out for changes at the front to take some pressure off our midfield and defence who had the ball coming back at them every time we had the ball up front.  The change we made was the wrong one in my opinion as I thought that Ba was more likely to score than an ineffective Best.

The performance wasn't just negative in the last 20 minutes, it was for most of the 2nd half and the problem wasn't with the centre of midfield or our defence, it was in the final third and that wasn't reacted to soon enough.

In the end Cabaye had to come off but that didn’t have to be the case if we’d made better changes earlier in the 2nd half.

We are too keen to beat ourselves up. Great win, let's not dwell on the negatives.

Nice two week break now and a pretty enticing game to come against Spurs.

Ben Arfa and Marveaux are being eased back so they're not injured all season.

Cabaye was knackered, so Gosling came on.

Loven came on because he had a good game against Forest.

Pardew knows it's going to be a long hard season and we'll need these players at some point. He seems very good at making all the players feel involved and valued. We're playing well above our level with an unbeatably low goals against and good attacking play. He's even got Jonas scoring!

I've taken a while to be convinced by the man but he's got me well onside at the moment.

Well said, especially the part about it being a long season and us needing all of our players.

I think this is a real test of his managerial ability right now. A great manager will make a few changes for the next game, including Santon for Raylor and Marveaux or HBA for Obertan, he could also drop one of Ba or Best for HBA, but that decision could go either way as both those players have been magnificent in the last few games.

The tried and trusted method of football management however tells us to keep faith with the players that have gotten us here, there is some validity in that but I would prefer us not to have to suffer a big loss before he feels warranted to play his strongest side.

Even I can't argue with the start we've had, I take my hat off to him. It's a staggering achievement, quite frankly.

Something he really needs to sort out, however, is his attitude to taking a lead, firstly that he seems to think it's an opportunity to give the shit players a run out - it's not a fucking testimonial - and secondly that he wants to take a "backs to the wall" approach but in the total absence of any defensive cover.

If you're slinging on two more centre halves with ten minutes to go and hauling your strikers off then that's an attitude I can understand, although generally it's not one I usually agree with against most sides, but he's asking players whose natural game is to pass it around and keep the ball not to do so and even bringing on shit players who will give the ball away so we can do a bit more defending! He needs to learn that just because you're in the lead doesn't mean you have to give the other team some sort of chance to get back into it by giving them the ball as often as possible. The absolute best way to defend is to keep the ball off the other team, we've got players who can do that and we had several more on the bench and we never used them, it's bizarre.

Spurs, sunderland, WBA last season and Fulham, Wolves this season, are all games where he has sent shit players on with hardly any time to go and we've immediately looked all the worse for it and found ourselves against a deluge of pressure. Thankfully the latter pair we've had a two goal lead and just managed not to surrender it in the last five minutes but it's been very close indeed to surrendering two late goals both times.

As I say though, onwards and upwards, if he can stop this sort of bollocks making life hard for ourselves, we look like a really decent side.

Ben Arfa (and Santon), the point is valid but not with Marveaux imo, unless he has some serious fitness issues that we're not being told about. He might as well be injured all season if he's only going to be able to complete 90/120 minutes in the Carling Cup and can't even manage 20 in the Premier League. Very odd. ???

There's no excuse for sending Lovenkrands on ahead of Sammy either. Lovenkrands offers absolutely no attributes that you might need when defending a lead while Sammy clearly does, namely pace and the ability to push the opposition back by taking them on, even if he is inexperienced.
