Worked marginally better but is never going to win you games convincingly. If people think we are going to be better than the likes of Liverpool etc playing like that over the next few seasons really need to check their heads. After about 50 minutes you could tell that he was getting fed up by his body language and starting to trapse around. Find it frustrating more than anything that we have a core group of players who are technically gifted and would fit in perfectly well with a flowing passing game, yet since the turn of the year there has been little effort made to play the ball along the ground and let players have a little bit of freedom. Instead we're stuck with players holding a rigid position whilst we repeatedly play 'broken record' football of hoof to Ba, flick, no one there, close down, get ball, give to Krul, hoof to Ba, repeat for most the game. Arsenal got stronger & seemed more dangerous, the players naturally revert to a more defensive mentality because of that & start hoofing it clear. Obviously Pards needs to change that, but he didnt go out and go "Ok first half worked really well, now lets start bollocking it down the pitch". Its clearly a players choice in the moment. Alan is not the right man for the job even if we are 6th, look at how we are playing, and with the players we have we should be able to do some what of a passing game. Look at the first goal! Now thats football! And Guthrie can fuck off for not following Vaermanelalaenl in to the box, he was right next to him and let him run in without even TRYING to follow, he actually gave them the chance. Agree. Given our midfield consisted of internationals who can play some pretty good football you've really got to question Pardew's ability to coach a team how to attack effectively on the floor. Rinse and repeat. So instruct Krul to go short and play it out from the back, the one time he did it when forced to do so by RVP we put together a slick passing move and got the ball in the box. If we tried to outplay Arsenal we would likely lose, as it was we nearly got a draw. I know the principle of "don't just defend" is a good one, but when the tide of the game is going against you and the opposition are a swift attacking team it's not quite as simple as that. See no logical reason he'd have suggested adopting that tactic after he clearly hadnt suggested they start the game with it & keeping it down was working well. Just not getting the breaks we were then it seems. Don't think he did especially badly today (in isolation, I mean) myself. Given that he hasn't matured as a side over the season, as a standalone game - to throw us into that formation and expect us to maintain a foothold in the game was a bit much to ask of the players. Their default setting under the cosh is still to play as he has got them playing for most of the season... hoof. Hopefully, he'll persist with our better footballers and not succumb to the dark-side of trying to grab 1-0s and sneak wins here and there, and shut up shop to hold out for points etc - tempting as its fruits may be short-term.
