the question is - how would you set up a team to beat Barcelone?

Mourinho had it right, ugly but that's the only way....well as long as Barcelona doesn't go on a diving fest and get your player sent off.

Think Ferguson's starting eleven maximised their chances but you can only do so much.

Only big question mark remains Berbatov, surely he would have given them something different which is exactly what they needed in the second half.

yup would agree with that. Feguson should have overloaded the midfield with Fletcher and use Nani/Valencia (on the wing) and Rooney for counter, basically 4-5-1. But he was too proud coz that would be labelled as defensive football which apparently is a crime these days. Playing two upfront with Hernandez having one of his off days definitely played into Barca's hands. Read somewhere that he was going to introduce Fletcher into midfield just before Messi scored....then it was too late coz Man Utd had to keep two strikers to attack. Agree also that Berbatov on the sub bench would have given them something different when they inevitably fell behind, no idea why he put Owen on the bench, tactical error from supposedly the best manager of the decade.

Two Andy Carrolls up front, endless long balls, midfielders running into the box for knock-downs, quality free-kick/corner taker, Rory Delap on throw-ins

Yet again Xavi was superb, a shame he sometimes gets overshadowed when everyone talks about Messi all the time.

Xavi's pass for Pedro's goal was unreal, but I think Messi just about beat him for the MOM award

That would be interesting, not sure it world work though coz Pique and Puyol (though he didn't start yesterday) are beasts in the air too. If anything they can be beaten by speed and quick movement which was what got Man Utd their goal.

My only disappointment was that they stopped attacking after the third goal. They could have had four or five.

The usual strategy for a team in that position is to stop pushing forward in numbers, but it often means surrendering the initiative to the opposition and having to endure a nervy last 10 minutes. The only time in the second half that Man U looked remotely like scoring was during that period.

Wenger often gets criticised for remaining on the attack rather than defending a lead, but I tend to think that it's the right percentage call.

Ferguson will not get a wink of sleep tonight for cursing the decision to play Valencia who simply had an appalling evening.

That wasn't the issue at all. The real issue was starting Hernandes ahead of Nani (like ive been saying for weeks tbf). Wing play is the only way you have some sort of chance against Barca and Nani would have caused them problems from the start (he caused them problems when he came on). Hernandes was totally annonymous.

Fletcher should have also started ahead of Giggs too but that wasn't as big a issue.
