Gabriel Obertan signs for Anzhi

Can see him excelling of the bench possibly, bring in speed when tired legs. Huge improvement on Routledge and Ranger I believe. Really hope he can be that impact sub, because surely Marveaux, Jonas and HBA are all ahead of him in the pecking order.

I like to use the 'James Milner scale' on signings like this, some fans think he is ok, the majority think he is shit and are just happy to get the money back on him.

Expectations being low can be a good thing, as long as some aren't so hell bent on being proved correct they fail to acknowledge any good.

Not excited by any means, but interested to see how he does and he'll get my full backing.

TTBAWA

Wat?

Toon Toon. Black and White Army.

Damn! I usually get them where others are scratching their heads but that completely went past me.

Anyway, say we sing a Peter Lovenkrands song about him like "Gabby Obertan..." what are the other words?

Best I can come up with is "He's fucking French, he's not Judi Dench, Gabby Obertan" so I'm hoping there are improvements to be made.

We needed to replace Routledge and we have done, finally. Not overly fussed on the signing itself (partially cos i'm still simmering about the N'Zogbia fiasco), but it's a body that we did need and i wasn't certain we'd go for. By that i mean another winger.

Certainly more pace in the squad now. Would imagine he'd be third or fourth choice behind Jonas, Marveaux and Barton. Can see him being a decent option from the bench if anything, particularly away from home.

Given that half our players are French I'm expecting to see Cabaye take quite an authorative role, if he does do that Barton may not be as big a miss as some imagine. Obertan could get more game-time than many think.

I think the problem with the negativity is to what extent Obertan is an addition to our squad. If - as it has been said - Obertan is an upgrade on Routledge, then I think most of us would agree it could be a good signing. After all, Routledge has had plenty of chances to prove it at this level, which he has failed to take, unlike Obertan to a certain degree.

If, on the other hand, he is to be Barton's replacement, then I think we all have the right to feel underwhelmed. Yet another opportunity to show that we can sign a proven quality player for a significant fee, missed.

Unfortunately, given the relative lack of investment in the squad, I have a nagging feeling that it's the latter, not the former.
