What is Charlton's protest all about?

"Newcastle made a written offer of £100,000 for Robbie on Wednesday, and made it clear that it was their final and best offer.

"The offer was rejected within minutes, and Newcastle then confirmed they no longer had an interest in the player.

"We have contacted the Premier League today to register our concern at public statements being made by Newcastle after they withdrew their interest."

Apparently he's not even Number 1 at Charlton. They've signed Ben Hamer who has taken over, elliott's only been playing cos Hamer has a thumb injury.

Looking at his wiki isnt very encouraging(assuming its him....)

My mate was saying that him moving has been talked about since April, with us being rumoured to be interested for a while. Maybe they've replaced him expecting this guy to already be gone?

Also he has an obscure squad number (#44), suggesting he wasn't originally given one this season.

Hamer was given #1, other new signing John Sullivan #13 and Pope (youth keeper) was given #30. To not give the guy that had started over 60 league games in the previous 2 seasons a squad number suggests they expected him to leave.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Rob Elliot was in the Charlton Athletic side who had to settle for a 2-2 draw at the Valley on Saturday against Scunthorpe United.

That came two days after Pardew confirmed his interest in signing the player a press conference, causing the Addicks to reported United for an illegal approach before making public the derisory bid that the Magpies had lodged.

As a few people have pointed out though, that wasn't the first official mention of Elliot and Newcastle, with Addicks boss Chris Powell mentioning the link earlier last week.

Addicks chief executive Stephen Kavanagh:

"In advance of our match against Scunthorpe, it is very disappointing that Alan Pardew has decided to make public an offer for Robbie Elliot despite assurances to the contrary that wouldn't happen from his club officials.

"Newcastle made a written offer of £100,000 for Robbie on Wednesday, and made it clear that it was their final and best offer.

"The offer was rejected within minutes, and Newcastle then confirmed they no longer had an interest in the player. We have contacted the Premier League to register our concern at public statements being made by Newcastle after they withdrew their interest."

Newspaper reports on Monday evening claimed that United had submitted a revised bid for Elliot that was likely to be accepted by the Addicks.

As is generally known, currently Newcastle goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman trained Elliot while the pair were together at The Valley, Woodman saying of the 'keeper last year that:

"Robbie has worked very hard to become our number one. He has just come back from his injury and he played on the weekend.

"He has huge potential and I believe it’s only a matter of time before the big clubs come knocking on our door.

"If he keeps working hard he could or should become a great goalkeeper in the Premier League. He has great distribution and comes for lots of crosses even though he is still young.

"He is probably the bravest keeper I’ve ever worked with."

PS: Newcastle have succeeded in signing a goalkeeper with connections to Woodman however - his son, Freddie. The England schoolboy international had been with Crystal Palace but is now a teenage Magpie.

The transfer window closes on August 31st @ 6pm
