Davide Santon (now retired)

Put him on the wing or something, tonight's error was awful.

They were calling it a blind pass on TV but he had a decent look, before playing the pass anyway. Terrible stuff and it was a real game changer :(

He obviously didn't have a decent look.

He didn't have time and was being closed down by 2 players, he turned towards Krul and one of the Benfica players had gone past him and would have blocked his view of Lima closing Krul down.

Just before he was closed down he turned himself into trouble by checking back rather than playing an out ball that was available to him. That's before we even get to your blocked view theory. A back pass from that position with that weight against a side with pacey attackers is always going to get your team into trouble, but as I said, he should never have got in a position to make that decision. Horrendous moment from him from start to finish, not just the backpass itself.

A natural left footed player wouldn't have played that backpass.

On the replays he did. A quick one but just enough to see a red shirt. I was confused as to why he played it anyway.

Yeah he does have like a second or so when he does look up.  Wasn't like one of those blind one's you do at times in 5 a side.

I think he has all the attributes to be an excellent fullback, I don't think we would make as good a winger at all.

Agreed. I think people are just clamouring for this more and more as we seem to be lacking wingers and he looks so suspect defensively at the moment.

That's probably part of the issue aye, also a less cultured player would have just humped it up the line.

Well he ball watches badly, that isn't a good attribute for a full back.

Sadly just doesn't seem a born defender. Really hope he can improve, but he's becoming a liability when pressurized and other teams must see that. He'll have real competition from Haidara next season, so guess we'll see what he's made of.

He looked so down after he made that mistake. Stupid error to make, not excusing that but Taylor's was just as bad.

Needs to be back in the starting lineup vs Fulham though imo. He already seems low on confidence, it would be shot to pieces if he was dropped.

Mistake aside, he was OK. And this is the same player, remember, who was arguably our best player - admittedly it wasn't very difficult - earlier in the season. I just hope, given that he's previously had confidence issues, the fans, players and management give him the support he needs to get over this, because I don't doubt that he has all the necessary attributes to be a very good fullback.

Terrible terrible error but I've seen enough from him in his career for us so far for me to have faith that he can turn it around.

Everyone at this club needs this nightmare season to just fucking end already, this guy in particular.

Couldn't agree more, it's the first time in a long time that I'm wishing for the season to end.

He's 22. He can only improve with experience. Daft to even suggest selling him.

Needs some time out though. He has severely fatigued at the turn of the year and the individual errors kept coming as a result. And that's after being one of the few to come out of the first half season with any credibility. Once Haidara is mentally ready he should take over for most of the matches. Santon desperately needs a rest.

He's got the potential to be a good player but at present he makes far too may mistakes, which have cost us dearly this season. Simpson is a far better defender than this kid, but look at the stick he gets in here.

Would like to see him played further up the pitch (instead of Jonas ideally) or dropped.

He's a good player. With some specialist coaching, he could be a fantastic player. Give him a cuddle and see what he's like next year. He's not helped by the lack of movement from our midfield and forwards.

Linked with Zenit today, incidentally.
