Davide Santon (now retired)

I have never been his biggest fan, he gives a lot of effort but he loses the ball or gives it away a lot when he flies forward, we get caught out a canny bit from the LB position because of it. Gouffran has definitely made it better on that side though, covers Santon really all of the time..

Santon's crossing is poor but that comes from him having to cut back to cross with his right, wold expect him to come inside and shoot a lot more too.

We need to try him as a winger, we don't have many wingers but have alot of leftbacks.  Lest we forget he started out as a winger and Mourinho converted him.

He is nowhere near good enough to be a winger

So Sissoko, Obertan or Sammy Ameobi are more effective Wingers?  He was decent when he played there against Wigan.

The worrying thing is that Santon has actually declined from one year ago until now. He is one of those that lost confidence and hit very bad form when things turned for the worse last season. He has been alright this season, imo (I think much of the criticism of him has been over the top), but I really want to see him improve and push on at this point of his career. I always thought the deal to buy him was fantastic business, and at the end of 2011-2012, I thought we had an absolute star developing at leftback. He is still very useful and easily the best left back here, but I am disappointed in his progress.

He needs to work on his offensive side of his game, I've no doubt he's continuing to mature as a defender. While still young he's still assured and when he's not caught out he does the business.  Think he sometimes also allows the crosser to get on his preferred foot a bit too much as well; but he'll learn from that.

If he's going to be attacking, he needs to offer more to us then -- be it shoot, cut in and play it in behind the defense etc.

He's a work in progress who I'm tough on because I expect more from him because he clearly has all of the ability, pace and size to be a top left back.

I find it weird  people are slamming him for giving the ball away. That's been a very recent thing, usually he has the highest pass completion rate in our team.

Fwiw I think with the right coaching he will be a brilliant player for us. He's only 22 and has loads of time to improve. The caveat is obviously that we need the right coaching staff to achieve this

I don't and its not the first time he's done it..... besides it led to one of their best chances and he has to cut that shit out.

Rightly been criticized for it.

Nobody did anything any good last season TBF, I would write that off for everyone.

Aye. The issue is he's one of the few that hasn't really looked better this term. It's pretty much he, Cisse and Colo who haven't had a number of really good games. The other two have been out the side too.

If he has the quality the months we have stuck by him will do him wonders in the long run

Nah, Santon is alright.

His positioning against Tottenham f.ex seemed to be according to instructions, not his personal opinion on where he should be which makes me inclined not to bother with most of the posts in here the last few days.

But I guess it's just in this formus spirit to alwyas find one specific individual to give unwarranted criticism, so Im not surprised that Santon is next on the list now that Debuchy has improved and Williamson miraculously is performing way above expectation.

Its not that at all really...... he has room for improvement in some areas and we are well aware of it pointing out where he can improve.

He's not being singled out unfairly for unjust criticism, apart from Everton i think he's been pretty decent defensively this season but decision making on the ball has been a bit disappointing.

Yeah, probably.

Worth quoting this for the people who say Santon should be a right-back and not a left-back.

Davide Santon happy to play right-back for Newcastle United

13 Nov 2013 07:44

Davide Santon has revealed he is prepared to play right-back for Newcastle United if called upon this season.

Alan Pardew will be without the suspended Mathieu Debuchy after the French international picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign during the 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

It means the manager must fill the gap against the Canaries on Saturday week.

Vurnon Anita is one option, with the midfielder able to drop back to either full-back position – but Santon has done the job at right-back for Inter Milan.

United also experimented with the Italian international in that position in pre-season this year and could require Santon to carry out the role against the Canaries.

Santon said: “I can play right-back. I prefer left-back but know I have to improve my left foot. When I play left-back I can go left to right.

“When I play right-back and try to go inside it is a little bit more difficult but I enjoy both.

“If the manager needs me to play right-back I am here to play where he wants me.”

United would be well stocked if they were to switch Santon to the right and should have both Geordie boy Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara available.

That would be a close call for Pardew, with Dummett taking full advantage of Haidara’s stint on the sidelines with solid displays.

Dummett was outstanding against Liverpool in the 2-2 draw when he scored his first goal for the Magpies, to achieve one of his boyhood dreams.

He will be fit and raring to go against Hughton’s troops and is perhaps United’s best option at left-back in what will be another cut and thrust encounter.

Santon added: “Paul is a young guy but he’s a good person.

“He always gives 100% in training so I am happy for him. We are happy he us with us in the team.”

Santon is the same age as Dummett at 22, but the Geordie boy is here to stay after signing a new long-term deal.

Santon – who made his Serie A and Champions League debut with Inter as a teenager – understands Dummett’s latest phase of development.

The Toon star said: “He is young and learning. He’s a good player and I think he will have a good future with us.”
