id absolutely love to know how much this is worth a year

Wonga pay #NUFC £4m PA. By our calculations, if Wonga loaned you £4M your annual interest would be £164M (Plus £5.50 transmission fee)

I don't know much about the controversies regarding the company itself, but purely in terms of aesthetics of the brand, i can't see it looking too bad on the shirt tbh. At least it's vaguely symmetrical, rather than just a 'stick this there then stick 'money' next to it' like the current one. It's a bit of a garish colour but meh, can't see it looking so bad.

Agreed. Wonga is an unknown company over here and the mockup of the shirt some pages back looked a damn sight better than the current one with VM as far as I am concerned. On the other hand I can see why fans living in the UK wouldn't be thrilled about walking around with a replica shirt advertising such a dubious company to be fair.

Edit: was on about this:

Thats actually not bad tbh. Its just the word 'Wonga' i f***ing hate. If they were called Aon, Standard Chartered, or Investec id be COMPLETELY over the moon, and not just pleased with all this.

why ?

Because i dont want a s*** word across the front of our tops?

does it matter what the word is when they are all very dodgy companies. I'd rather have Shit & co on the shirt if it was a reputable company. theres some style over substance going on here, not to mention snobbery.

Style is much more relevant than substance when all people are concerned with is how it will look on the shirt. I'm indifferent about who we take money from.

Well, don't have to wonder if I'll end up shelling out for a strip for the next four years, must be the first time these arseholes have actually saved someone money.

Puma can go ahead and put on all the skunk stripes and spikes and slashes they want now.

would it be possible to structure a deal in different ways, for example, shirt sponsorship, also money for the academy etc...different monies for different things could make a deal of difference when it comes to the tax man and accounts.

Newcastle North MP slams Wonga tactical error

Catherine McKinnell, Member of Parliament for Newcastle North, reacted with shock and dismay at the news that Newcastle United have today entered into a sponsorship deal with pay-day lenders Wonga.

Catherine said “Whilst I appreciate the importance of sponsorship to Football clubs, partnering with a pay-day lender is a tactical error.

“Pay-day lenders prey on the most vulnerable people in society, namely those on low incomes or unemployed. I know of many cases where constituents have turned to pay-day lenders in desperation and find themselves trapped in a cycle of debt at excessive interest rates of over 4000% per annum.

“During this double-dip recession, Wonga have seen their profits soar as many households struggle to make their income stretch to cover the rising costs of living.

“I am disappointed that the board has chosen to associate our club, brand and city with practices which too often penalise struggling families. I worry that by associating the club with such a company, it could normalise their practise and plunge many more families into the cycle of debt. Many will see this deal as money from misery.

“The Government must take steps to better regulate the consumer lending industry to stop companies taking advantage of people, often at their lowest point, by charging excessive interest rates. There also needs to be much better financial education to enable people to fully understand what a dreadful deal they are being offered.

“I would also like to see the Football Association take a firm stance on this issue and extend the ban on alcohol and gambling advertising to include payday loan companies on merchandise for under-18s.”

Wonga are a shit company and they're only sponsoring us because of the high level of unemployment up here.  I'm over the moon that the ground is reverting to it's proper name but I can't seperate that from the company that we'll be helping to shit on even more people.

People's option to go with Wonga at the end of the day.

And?  People chose to do a lot of things for different reasons, it doesn't make it right and let's be honest nobody would make that choice unless they had to.

Not true sometimes Mick, plenty of people go to places like that because they have to have something. They don't need it or cant afford it but they have to have it......we are in a world like that now.

Does these people being “inherently stupid” make taking the piss out of them right?  They go with Wonga and the like because nobody else will give them a loan, they don't do it out of choice most of the time, it's out of necessity and that's a big difference.

Aye, things like gas, electricity, food etc.  We're talking about people who have nothing, not people who are looking for a night at the theatre.

Some do granted, but I'd wager the vast majority don't.

Hope our next sponsor is a heroin dealer. I mean, they're not bad people, it's people's own stupid fault for buying it.

To be honest, some people wouldn't give a shit as long as it doesn't affect them in a negative way.  It's even better if they're going to get something out of it.
