Semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) will be used in a competitive English football matches for the first time during the FA Cup fifth round in March.

The technology will be used in seven of the eight fifth-round ties, with the exception being Preston North End against Burnley at Deepdale, the only fixture not being played at a Premier League stadium.

If the SAOT trial is considered to be a success, the Premier League will look to introduce the technology into the top flight at a later date.

The FA also confirmed that all eight matches in the FA Cup fifth round would use video assistant referees (VAR) and in-stadium VAR announcements.

nothing will be as bad as the one we got against us at PSG.

I think the one above tops it.

Utterly ridiculous that wasn't overturned. How anyone who has ever watched football can possibly thing that's a penalty is beyond me.

That’s worse than the one given against Tino like.

Not sure where to put this. I mentioned it in the match thread, but think it’s worth discussing further.

By letter of the law our penalty was a penalty, but I think it’s harsh, and would be fuming if it went against us.

In my opinion I think anything from the elbow and up shouldn’t be handball. I just don’t think you have enough control over that part of your body. It’s almost impossible to move it in or out of the way of the ball.

Anything on your forearm down with a deliberate attempt to play the ball with your hands, or to have those parts of your body in an unnatural position should result in a handball decision.

Your elbow doesn’t stick out that far naturally

Have they stopped giving yellows for kicking the ball away?

Same lad did it twice for them yesterday and didn't get booked

Yeah the first one was so blatant too

Forest proper upped their timewasting after it as well. Well until we had our 11 minute blitz anyway.

Shirt pulls are basically not a foul anymore too. Dan Burn nearly had his top taken off at a free kick yesterday and was completely ignored.

Not this game but I swear I’ve seen about 5 foul throws at SJP this season and the refs just ignoring them

Its a interresting theory of the law your making out there. As always players will try to stretch the law in their advantage, and its a reason for the arm in a natural position.

If the ball hits the elbow and forarm(not bounce but like the red mark in the pic under), is that a freekick/pen or is it ok?  I bet you would get more elbows sticking out in various positions if that became the law [emoji38]

I do agree with you that I hope they do something with the current handball rule. I dont especially like the natural position thing, because then its up to someone to judge if the arm is in a natural position.

If the ball is coming at you and you wish to prevent it with your arms, you aren’t really going to be sticking your elbow out as your more instinctive move would be to stick your hand or arm out.

Also if you stick your elbow out, then that in turn would bring your forearm and hand out with it, thus increasing the chances of it hitting either of those.

The chances are that if it hits your elbow or upper arm, the ball is either going to hit your shoulder or the side of your body in anyway, and you have no ability to control the ball with it hitting your upper arm or elbow.

I think we have done far too many changes to handball recently, from everything is handball, to the T-shirt rule, and now the armpit rule.

The obvious and easiest way to both prevent people from controlling the ball with a hand or arm, and being able to measure where it hit correctly is by just using the forearm & hands method.

For me it should be deliberate handballs only. If you jump to block the ball and it hits you on the hand, that’s just bad luck.

Alternatively you could look at a punishment like indirect freekick or something, instead of a pen. A free goal is too consequential in football for such a random event to lead to one.

But there are also situations where a ball is in the air and you can deliberately use your upper arm to block it/control it or even take it away from an opponent. In this case you could even deliberately score with your upper arm or elbow. Players allways bend the rules and take full advantage of them.

Those cases would be extremely rare, compared to penalties given against a team like what happened to Nottingham Forest yesterday.

You think they are rare until the rules are changed, and we get to see how often it can be used. The ball is in the air a lot. Sometimes the ball is at a height where it would be much more convenient to use you upper arm to hit the ball past someone (or make a pass) rather than having to raise your leg or put it down with your chest. Players would practice using the upper arm to your advantage on the training ground. It's hard to know how often it can be used when it's against the rules.
