midds
To have to draw parallel lines on a screen to decide which FUCKING SHOULDER was closer to the goal line in order to disallow a goal is fucking mental. If it's that close then you just go with whatever they went with on the field at the time, surely? I originally thought that VAR was there to correct howlers, clearly incorrect decisions that were obviously wrong as soon as you watched it again. Now they're going to the nearest mm with lines drawn on various slides or images based on questionable footage based on questionable stopping of the action a the ball is 'passed' and certain body parts are deemed on or offside based on pixels and then the computer takes over and turns it into a plane rather than a line and it's decided that the attacker is 2mm offside so the goal is disallowed?? Fuck clean off man, the whole thing is rank. It's gone for us at times and gone against us too, at some point they just need to say 'it's really fucking tight, let's just go with what they went with at the time'

You would just be moving the line and have even more controversy. It can be infuriating but it's the only way and relying on just the lino would be madness, it's an impossible job for a pair of human eyes.

But going with the on field decision is just arbitrary in situations like this. If you're going to go to the effort of checking an incident at that point you are committed to coming to the correct decision. In terms of an offside it's pretty black and white. There's more nuance to fouls and the like but even here they're fucking it up. If you do have a situation which is too close to call for an offside I'd say rule should be benefit of doubt to the attacker: give the goal.

It wasn't an impossible job for decades and decades prior to VAR. Relying on the lino enables the rule to be applied in the spirit it was created: to prevent unfair advantages. I'll take that over the ludicrously pedantic, overzealous and unnecessary application by VAR.

I agree with this really, it’s just that TV then started drawing lines and spending hours debating goals that they said shouldn’t have been given. GeordieDazzler
Random one but are foul throws just not a thing anymore? Leicester did the most blatant one I’ve ever seen yesterday and the ref just played on. You could see some of our players appeal and be absolutely confused he didn’t bring it back. Arsenal did a couple too and ref just allowed it.

I'm still convinced it was a foul throw by Palace at the start of the phase of play that led to their equaliser

I'll take that over the ludicrously pedantic, overzealous and unnecessary application by VAR. Which is why a lot of us would rather fuck off VAR. But if you are going to have it then you can't just have VAR look at an incident and just go "fuck it, this is quite tight, just give whatever whether it was correct or not". It's the main reason imo that VAR is proving so controversial. It's one thing to have a decision go against you on the pitch and then later see that it was wrong. The ref is only human and mistakes will be made. We can accept that. It's much harder to accept though when they review an incident and still get it wrong. AyeDubbleYoo
Yeah IMO if you have VAR then it has to be with the aim of correcting on-field decisions. It just looks silly to have things that are clearly wrong upheld because the ref said so. The spirit of the offside rule is harder to solve though, because it was written in a time where an inch here or there wouldn’t rule you offside. Of course, it also worked the other way where you could be ruled offside when you were actually on. Which now shouldn’t happen.
