loki679
But we were interested in Maiga, and as far as I understood we didn't sign him cause of medical's failure. So could now somebody please explain me how come we're not interested in buying any new striker in January, according to Pards? What, we needed one only if we got Maiga? Cos it'd cost money Decent chance we'll get a new striker and pay a fee for him at the moment.

ohmelads
You suspect the club thought they could gamble through the whole season with 3 centre-backs and when that gamble fell apart, so did the bid for Maiga. We will now buy a defender instead with the Maiga money. This has generally been how Ashley operates. Any injury for Ba after the ACN would show what a silly gamble it is, too. We need a striker and a defender. We may have bodies but Lovenkrands and Ameobi will never be prolific, and Best is looking the same way. Ben Arfa may come good as a second striker but he'll always be more of a provider and a link up man than a goal poacher. The decision not to bring a striker in will prove very costly unless we are very lucky with injuries. As far as Pardew is concerned, he's probably been told to decide between a striker and a defender. If that is the case then you would have to go with a defender after the goals we gave away in recent weeks. But truth be told, we need both because we are very over-reliant on Ba. It does look very convenient for Ashley that the Maiga deal fell through on medical grounds just as we urgently need a defender too.
Dr Venkman
The thing is, if Pardew continues the good work and we qualify for Europe either this season or next it's likely that Ashley's transfer policy won't change, imagine gambling like this with the squad but with all the Europa League games as well, we'll probably finish bottom half. Decky
Hopefully a good top 7/8 finish might trigger someone buying the club and that kind of transfer policy will be gone. We can dream.

I doubt we'd have made up a story about Maiga failing a medical if we had decided we wanted a defender instead, we could just as easily have pulled the plug by saying our priorities had changed due to our injury list and we would be back in the summer for Maiga. Our buying policy looks to be more long term so I reckon we'd have bought him if he'd passed the medical.

Who needs Kim Jong indeed. How about treating each topic on it's merit?

TRon
The club lie to us - FACT. The manager, the chairman, the owner - they all lie to us - FACT. So what? Does that mean you have to think that every single story is a lie rather using your own brain to decide? Sounds like a pretty daft attitude but each to his own. Cajun
The club lie to us - FACT. The manager, the chairman, the owner - they all lie to us - FACT. Not that I am excusing the tossers that run the club but I bet if any chairman/owners were taken to a tribunal the aggrieved manager would have some evidence that proved they had lied to the fans at some point.
