I think the reason I'm quite indifferent to the possibility of Ba leaving is due to the fact that I want to see this guy flourish again so, so much!

I honestly think if we get him central again with the support from Cabaye and two competent wide players we will see more of what we saw last season from him, we still desperately need backup forwards though.

Really hope putting him through the middle improves him but i'm not convinced. Thought he was good against man united and scored a good goal but then he was absolutely diabolical against arsenal. Pretty much played with 10 men the amount of times he mis-controlled/gave away the ball.

We shouldn't really be asking him to be too involved with build up play though.

You have to in this day and age. Even Defoe has been improving that side of the game and Bent isn't getting a game partly because of it.

Ba is hardly Bergkamp but he's better in that regard and Cissse needs to develop that part of his game.

Cisse last season made brilliant runs and dragged opposition defences around almost at will. He may be worse at build up play than Ba but he's not terrible at it and does work hard imo (unlike Bent), he's more like Torres. With Cabaye, Ben Arfa or Marv behind him he'll get plenty of goals and doesn't detract from the team imo. Problem is when he has to work as a winger, or is expected to hold up play when we're hoofing he looks ineffectual

Tempting to draw a paralell to Higuain who cant put a foot right to save his life outside of the box, show him a clean pass inside though and its in the net.

Just use him correctly, he is limited but then again so is alot of other brilliant players if used the wrong way.

Not suited on the wing and thats fine, he isnt a winger.

Needs service, simple as.

Harsh on Higuain.

Very harsh.

Higuian can pass, dribble etc etc and actually started his career as a winger..... he's a lot better than as far as his overall game goes than given credit for IMO.

Also Madrid have missed him a lot in my view and won have won more points if he had been fit.

Really looking forward to see what he can do with no Demba Ba in the side.

i think he will be like a new man

or he continues to struggle and we play the 2nd half of the season with no goal scorer

Be that as it may,  when you see him alongside someone like Benzema it eventually becomes clear that one of them can play in the Rooney-role and the other cant. Higuain is without doubt competent enough outside of the box by normal standards, just not when you compare him to others in the Real madrid squad. It was said slightly tongue-in-cheek.

He is a striker first and foremost and there is nothing wrong with that, just like there is nothing wrong with old-school defenders such as Zanetti who might not possess the hollywood-style bombing down the flank but nontheless does a fantastic job doing what he is principally there to do. Defend.

True he's not Benzema or Rooney level but those players grew up as footballers as practically as midfielders which is why their technique is so faultless... Ibra the same.

But he still does a competent job and is capable of dribbling past a player or two or laying on a goal for a team mate.

None the less i agree what you have said in that response

Sounds daft but i'm a little concerned that 90% of his goals are great goals/finishes. IMO a top striker needs those scruffy ones. Not the hit on the arse and go in but tap-ins.

Maybe his and Ba's strike partnership is better than I realise but for a few of Ba's goals this season (Wigan, Man C, Arsenal 2nd) Cisse's been in the box but not in the best position to score a goal. Hopefully, that's just Ba getting into positions earlier. Nothing to do with "playing RW" as Ba was widest for the Arsenal goal.

There's no link-up so they fight for the same space. Pardew's only answer so far has been to sacrifice Cisse and bung him on the right.

That's a fair point. I do think he's equal to Ba in terms of hold up though, even better on some occasions. He can't really do the brute force backing in type stuff but his ball control is often much better and he releases the ball quicker.

There's a bit of unfair stuff being said about him in the Ba thread as well with regards to him playing in a 2. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't flourish in a 2 if we found him the right partner and created some chances from wide, Debuchy should help massively with this.

EXCLUSIVE: Papiss Cisse on his love for Newcastle United and the City

by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

Jan 1 2013

PAPISS CISSE today reflected on 12 months of wearing Newcastle United’s iconic number 9 shirt by insisting: "There's no other place I'd rather be."

Cisse is keen to add to his 18 goals in 38 matches for United and follow in the footsteps of the crowd favourites he has followed by wearing the famous jersey in such emphatic style like Alan Shearer, Andy Cole and Les Ferdinand in the Premier League.

And he is confident that Newcastle can claw themselves away from danger in 2013 – and the Toon number 9 has insisted that the black and whites are well and truly together in their fight to stave off the threat of relegation.

Just four years ago, the Magpies went down without a fight after a four different managers and a clutch of players who weren’t fully committed to the United cause.

Yet the Senegal goal-getter feels that Newcastle can put the second half of 2012 well and truly behind them and concentrate on brighter days ahead.

The Newcastle star told the Chronicle: “The players here are very friendly and there is a lot of love.

“We play here and we have a job to do. Everything is fine.”

United fans have been fearing the worst after seeing their side crash to a morale draining 7-3 defeat at the hands of Arsenal last Saturday night to sign out of 2012 on a low.

But while Cisse noted the goals against column and the fact that Newcastle are actually two points worse off at this stage than they were when they went down in 2009, he was refusing to panic.

Indeed, with games against Everton, Norwich and then fellow top flight strugglers Reading and an even leakier defensive side in Aston Villa to round off January, the striker said: “The best thing is we are still scoring goals.

“This makes us confident and it is a good thing that Newcastle are still scoring but we know that things are difficult.

“We are trying our best to come back up the table.

“The main thing is we still have our confidence which is demonstrated by the goals we have scored at Old Trafford and the Emirates.”

Cisse has been fielded as a right midfielder-cum-winger in recent weeks.

But Cisse signified the team ethic of Alan Pardew’s squad when saying: “The position I am playing in now is not my favourite but I understand the team now has a problem.

“And I have to give my best because that’s what the manager asks of me.

“It is not a problem because I am still giving something to the team.

“I have not played this position before in all my time playing in football, it is the first time.

“The manager has shown me how to do this job.

“We have some players who are carrying injuries.

“It is difficult but I am doing my best to answer the questions asked of me by the manager.

“That is all I have been doing.”

But he is still looking forward to a return to his more familiar role of poacher – with his performances in 2012 rekindling memories of Andy Cole for some United fans.

He said: “My best position is a striker and to be there to score the goals.

“But when the team is in a position like they are now with many injuries I work for the team.”

Cisse was also reflecting on the move he made from Germany last January.

And while much has been made about his relationship with Demba Ba of late, he says he is still living the dream.

He said: “I came here to work for the manager and give my best for the club because I love the club and I love the city.

“That’s what I am going to continue to do.

“The position I am playing in now is not my favourite but I understand the team now has a problem.

“And I have to give my best because that’s what the manager asks of me.

“It is not a problem because I am still giving something to the team.”

After starting his Toon career with a bang last year, Cisse would love to get 2013 off to a flying start by netting against Everton tomorrow night.

Looking ahead to the first home fixture of the year, he said: “I know this game is a very difficult one.

“We are conscious that as we cross into the new year that we need to win this game so we can go into 2013 with new challenges, have a new focus, be happy and win the game.

“It is very important.

“And we are working hard because we know that Everton will not be easy.

“These guys play very, very well and they have good players.

“We must be at our best for this game.”

EXCLUSIVE: Papiss Cisse - Newcastle fans will see best of me in 2013

by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

Jan 1 2013

PAPISS CISSE today promised the Toon Army that 2013 will be the year that the Geordie fans see the very best of him in Newcastle United’s coveted number 9 shirt.

And with United supporters concerned over the potential exit of 13-goal top scorer Demba Ba, Cisse’s new year vow could hardly be better timed.

Indeed, if Ba was to quit the Magpies, the emphasis would be placed firmly on Cisse’s shoulders to find the goals to haul Newcastle away from the relegation zone, and push on in both the FA Cup and Europa League.

But Cisse believes that Newcastle is still the place to be next year despite their precarious position, and the striker is hungry for success in both cups.

Cisse has been out of form in the second half of 2012, but he still checked out of the calendar year with 18 United goals – five more than Ba during the 12 months.

And if handed the central role that many fans are keen to see the natural born finisher restored to, Cisse told the Chronicle: “I have never lost any confidence. I know sometimes life can be difficult – but I know that in 2013 I will be the Papiss I have been before. That is what I am working for.

“It was my dream to come to Newcastle – and it still is a dream to be here. I came to learn very important things in football.

“I know that this year I will be much better.”

Cisse has been touched by the kind-hearted Newcastle fans who have never turned on him, despite going five months without a goal.

“I am very conscious about the fact I need to work hard,” he said. “The team believe in me and the supporters do as well.

“I know that because during difficult times I wasn’t playing like I was before, but the supporters and people who are my fans have never let me down.

“They have tried to push me and tried to encourage me.

“Next year I will be the same Papiss that I was when I come here. That is what I am hoping for.”

Cisse is approaching the one-year anniversary of his whirlwind move from Bundesliga outfit Freiburg.

And while United fans have been disheartened about the talk of Ba being linked with a host of clubs throughout the holiday period, Cisse has no intention of leaving.

Senegal star Cisse would not be drawn on compatriot Ba’s future, and preferred to focus on turning United’s season around.

He said: “At the club everything is fine for me.

“I am happy to be in the team and everybody here gives me the support. I feel like I am at home when I am here.”

Cisse quickly won over hearts and minds on Tyneside when he smashed home a debut goal against Aston Villa.

And he insisted that he still regards the move to St James’ Park as a dream come true.

He said: “I know it is down to myself to work hard.

“To achieve what I dream to do I must to do this more and more. I know I can get there and I’m glad to stay in Newcastle.”
