ALAN Pardew says he has a “tough call” to make on his Newcastle United team to take on Aston Villa – with Papiss Demba Cisse and Demba Ba pushing for starts at St James’s Park.

The Senegalese pair returned from the African Cup of Nations this week.

And Cisse, signed from Freiburg for £9m last month, trained with his new United team-mates today ahead of Sunday’s home game.

The 26-year-old’s expected to make his Newcastle debut against Villa, though it could be from the bench.

Pardew, delighted to also have 15-goal top scorer Ba again available, is keeping his cards close to his chest.

United beat Blackburn Rovers 2-0 on Wednesday night to move up to fifth place in the Premier League, and Cisse won’t necessarily walk into his starting XI.

Pardew has been pleased with the contribution of Leon Best in their absence, while Peter Lovenkrands also earned praise after coming off the bench and having a hand in Gabriel Obertan’s injury-time goal at Ewood Park.

“It’s a tough call on Sunday as to what we’re going to do with Cisse and Demba,” Pardew told the Gazette.

“Best was sick, but he was brilliant (against Blackburn).

“These players deserve everything that they’re getting at the moment – the Bests, the Lovenkrands and the Perchs (James Perch). They’re the ones that are important when you’re trying to achieve something special.”

The Blackburn game came less than 24 hours after the closing of the transfer window.

United were unable to prise defender Adrian Mariappa away from Watford, who rejected a series of bids from the club late last month.

But versatile Perch’s performances in the club’s last two games heartened Pardew, who is short of defensive cover.

Pardew is also without the suspended Yohan Cabaye for the next games, while Cheik Tiote is still on international duty with the Ivory Coast, who take on co-hosts Equatorial Guinea in their African Cup of Nations quarter-final on Sunday.

“Perch’s performance at Brighton buoyed me a little bit,” said Pardew.

“I think he can stand in there if we need to.

“I still would have taken the boy from Watford, make no mistake, but when it wasn’t to be, I wasn’t going to chase anyone else and waste money.”

Pardew also revealed that a couple of players had opted against loan moves under pressure from their team-mates.

There was interest in Best and Lovenrkands from Celtic and Birmingham City respectively.

But the only deadline day departure was highly-rated defender James Tavernier, who joined League One club MK Dons on loan for the rest of the campaign.

And Pardew said: “It’s very, very important to have that camaraderie amongst the group. Fair play to them.”
