I thought the Championship kicked off a week before the Prem?

LEAGUE BACKING THE 2012 OLYMPICS

The 2012/13 Football League season will kick off on the later than usual date of August 18th, after clubs voted to wait until the end of the 2012 Olympics.

The games, which will be held in London, will run from the 27th July to 12th August, with the new football season getting underway eight days later.

Speaking on the decision The League's Head of Communications John Nagle said: "Football League clubs have voted overwhelmingly in favour of delaying the start of the 2012/13 season in order to support the London Olympics. This decision has been taken to ensure that police and transport links are not overstretched during such an important event for the country."

AC Milan at Pittsburgh?

Top European soccer clubs want to hold match at Heinz Field

June 1, 2012 10:21 pm

By Shelly Anderson / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A.C. Milan, looking for a soccer match in Pittsburgh this summer, could face Newcastle United Aug. 3 at Heinz Field, those familiar with the planning said.

The popular European club last month outlined plans for a game here Aug. 4 against a team to be determined as part of its summer tour of the United States. However, local organizers were caught off-guard by that announcement, and the Pittsburgh Passion is playing host to the Women's Football Alliance championship at the stadium that day.

The match against Newcastle is not finalized, but moving the game back one day could help facilitate a deal.

We are taking our time over both the new shirt and our pre-season plans, typical Newcastle. The fans are always the last to know, not the end of the world like.

Newcastle United can today confirm that they travel to Portugal at the end of July to compete in the Guadiana Torneo.

The three-team tournament will be held between Thursday, 26th July and Saturday, 28th July at the Algarve Stadium, near Faro.

As well as the Magpies, current Portuguese Liga champions FC Porto and Greek giants Olympiacos will also take part in the pre-season competition, which will give Alan Pardew's side some vital match practice ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.

Porto have won their national top flight championship for six of the last seven seasons, regularly being a force in the Champions League, while Olympiacos took the Greece Superleague title and reached the last 16 of the Europa League last term.

The Guadiana Torneo matches are as follows (all kick-off times are local):

Thursday, 26th July - FC Porto v Olympiacos (8.45pm kick-off)

Friday, 27th July - Newcastle United v Olympiacos (8.45pm kick-off)

Saturday, 28th July - Newcastle United v FC Porto (8.45pm kick-off)
