Know nowt of the player, but I have to agree with those who think this is clearly a replacement for Ba. We wouldn't be spending £8m+ on someone who isn't going to start every week, and rightly so in our position. We've already seen how Ba likes to be the main man.

What's the problem if we can afford it?

We can't.

Hate to harp on saying the same thing, but Pardew came out today saying we've got extra money to spend. We've already lost two strikers this summer (tenuously including Smith there).

Extra money might be £8m in total, not to blow on one player who might be on the bench. Add in the supposed Debuchy thing and the fact we pay up front - without flogging someone for good money that's gonna be like £15m down. Be realistic mate.

If (and it's only an IF) Ba is stalling on deciding his future, in the hope that his form last season will smoke out a mega contract then he can do one.

Like what I've seen of this lad de Jong and would be an exciting addition. Plus I love it when we buy strikers.

Simpson will be flogged as well if Debuchy comes in so in terms of net spend I doubt it will be crippling.

We've been linked with him for ages haven't we.

Young player with potential to get a lot better who will be on a low wage from a smallish club in a lesser league. Sounds blueprint as fuck tbh.

We're going to need a few more players next season n all, our squad is too small as it is nevermind with Euro games and the ACoN again.

Simpson should be flogged regardless.

If this is aimed at me, I don't claim to know anything other than what the club publishes.

Sky Sports understand Newcastle have bid £8million (€10m) for FC Twente star Luuk de Jong.

The Premier League club have long been linked with the Holland international, who went to Euro 2012 but did not play in his nation's disappointing campaign.

Newcastle have now made their first approach and Sky sources understand Twente are considering the offer as boss Steve McClaren thinks about the options.

The pursuit of De Jong will do little to quash reports Demba Ba is set to leave St James' Park this summer and it appears to be the case of Alan Pardew lining up replacements.

It has in the past been reported Twente value De Jong at closer to £12.5m so it remains to be seen whether Newcastle are successful in their initial approach.

Pardew had in January shown interest in the 21-year-old but instead decided to bring in Papiss Cisse from Freiburg.

De Jong has also been linked with Tottenham, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund after scoring 39 goals in 76 games for Twente.

I'm being realistic in the sense that i'm going purely off facts*. We've cleared out a high earner as well as one or two others who won't have been on a complete tuppence... coupled with the fact Pardew saying we've got more money to spend... not forgetting the fact that there has been absolutely no evidence to suggest Ba is leaving (unless you count an interview where he's constantly smiling ear to ear when talking about us). Plus, this is only trusting Pardew mind, Ashley apparently wanting to make something out of the club again from a footballing pov.

I can understand the scepticism but i'm going to remain glass-half-full until there's the merest hint that Ba is off.

*for the sake of this argument, i'm going to say that we've definitely bid for De Jong.

De Jong wont come here to sit on the bench as theres clubs at a similar level to us who want him to start..... if he comes here he's starting.

The mere fact the offer is similar to Ba's release clause speaks volumes as well, if De Jong comes in it means Ba is on his way IMO.

As will Simpson if we bring in Debuchy ( although we will all be dancing at that outcome)
