Alan Pardew

This "Pardew finished 5th" malarky needs to stop.

Carr assembled us an excellent team, and we finished 5th despite Pardew, not because of him. His part in putting that team together was next to none, and although he's a good spokesman and says all the right things and comes over as very articulate, he hasn't got the faintest idea on how to put together an attacking side that has any flair or can play lesser teams off the park.

We defend doggedly, but once we get the ball we're just not set up to exploit teams or create chances.

If we can't praise him for doing well then we can't criticise him for doing badly then. Thread over.

Nonsense.

He deserves praise for last season as much as criticism for this.

This 'we didn't use Europe as an excuse for bad results in the past' isn't entirely true either. Bobby did. Granted shepherd wouldn't move the games back 24 hours in order to get the sky £ (we had expected champs league) but the excuse was trotted out regularly all the same.

Europe obviously has some degree of negative effect, it would be foolish to argue otherwise.

It only starts becoming an "excuse" when we're doing exceptionally badly.

same argument as "tired" players; messi and ronaldo aren't tired playing 70 or so games a season are they?

nobody would be talking about europe if we'd swashbuckled our way through the games, or indeed any fucking games at all the entire season to date

i'm entirely convinced everything about this season is coming down to our coaching and style of play with the obvious exception of injuries and the depth of squad in certain positions...we saw it last year, players didn't want to leave the pitch and would play through to stay in the team, this year they can hardly hide their distaste at being on it if you ask me

Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Spurs all regularly play 2 games a week and their match preparation is still consistent. Probably because they have a style of play they've all been trained to play in the first place and concern themselves more with asserting their superiority on teams and not countering the strengths of other teams.

No, consider the fact the most of our European games have seen us field the reserves it is not an excuse.

Aye, the obvious difference in quality and quantity between their squads and ours has nothing to do with it..

Odd that was overlooked..

The point that we're far too focussed on stopping other teams as opposed to going out and playing our own game still stands though..

It's a related point though - it's far easier to impose your style on an opponent when you have far more/better players than they do.

Bobby wasn't moaning about Europe, he was moaning about playing wolves on the Saturday morning, less then 48 hours after playing Basle on the Thursday.

Bobby wanted the game played on Sunday, not Saturday lunch time.

Edit, we drew with Wolves on Saturday lunch time 1-1, after playing on Thursday.

It's an excuse. They still have the same amount of time as us to prepare for each match. Having a better squad doesn't magically gift them more time to prepare.

It is an excuse, but a valid one IMO. There's a reason the teams playing in Europe regularly have far bigger squads.

Bit of a vicious circle for teams like us though - you need the money from Europe to afford more/better players, and you need those players to do well in Europe - increase your squad size and cost to compete well in Europe then don't qualify and you're fucked.

I don't disagree that the squad isn't equipped to handle as many games. However I also find Pardew has shown his limitations this season as a manager.
