Agree. Though I'm not sure why she didn't just put it up for sale as soon as it was gifted to her.

 

Maximum value. Hence why clubs need to be protected. It's interesting because Southampton has passed to her under intestacy (i.e. on the death of another) she, I assume, doesn't have to satisfy any of the fit and proper criteria. Not that that's a high threshold, but I'm not sure the FA would have let her purchase Southampton on the basis that she wanted to sell all the assets for maximum value (assuming that's what she wants).

 

This actually means if there was no will. Had to say that, sorry.

Could somebody explain to me the argument regarding Ashley 'converting the £129m debt into equity', as other PL owners have done?

 

I've tried to get my head round it but it seems I'm a complete tard when it comes to economics/business. :blush:

As an Englishman currently hoofing it around Australia – land of beachwear, cardboard skyscrapers and vast untapped underground reserves of high-end fusion cuisine – there was something comforting this week in the news that Arsenal may or may not be about to sign Julian Draxler from Schalke. This seems to be the plan for Arsène Wenger. Not a centre-forward, or a poacher or some seasoned gun for hire. But Julian Draxler of Schalke: subtle, languid and – as it turns out – now also injured for the next three months.

 

Just the idea that Wenger has thought about this long and hard, listened to the arguments on all sides, and decided yes what we really need here is someone to play between the lines of the spaces between the lines, was enough to make the heart swell with a sense of all being right with the world, like hearing distant news of cancelled trains or snow chaos on the A40. It really doesn't matter if Arsenal have any chance of signing Draxler or not. What matters is that life keeps rolling along, there is indeed still honey for tea, and Wenger's own desire to paint the world a shade of attacking midfielder continues to rage on regardless.

 

There is, in fairness, some variation here. Arsenal have tended to go for short, bouncy attacking midfielders. Whereas Draxler is something different, a tall, gangly attacking midfielder. Plus he would be a great addition to the Premier League, a languid and incisive creator in the first bloom of a precocious talent with an excellent name, which makes him sound like a glazed high society drug dealer in a Bret Easton Ellis novel. And he is just a lovely player to watch, with a habit of appearing in the right place without ever seeming to be in heading off anywhere in a particular hurry, like a footballing version of the ideal country house Butler, always popping up behind you with an umbrella, a pot of marmalade, the perfectly cushioned nudge-volley assist.

 

Not that this is the big thing about Draxler to Arsenal. The real point is that he isn't a striker. Such has been the chorus of complaint, the barking sense of absolute conviction that Wenger must, must buy a striker that, as the transfer window flutters by, one thing above all seems patently clear. He isn't going to buy a striker. It is best just get used to this fact, to acknowledge that this is a man who would rather die on his feet in the throes of a soft-shoed sideways dink, than live on his knees if that means being obliged to perform a series of hopeful diving headers.

 

There has been some talk about Wenger wanting to turn Draxler into the new Robin van Persie. But it sounds unlikely, if only because this isn't an oversight or a coincidence, but a distinct and consistent plan. In the past four years Arsenal have spent £13m on functioning centre-forwards. In the same period Wenger has spent £120m on attacking midfielders – not to mention £15m on left-backs, including £6m on the now-departed "false three" André Santos. There is a sustained plan here, the entirely logical behaviour of a man for whom there is only one answer to every question – when he has a burst pipe Wenger doesn't call a plumber: he calls an attacking midfielder – and a coherent tactic in its own right. Arsenal have certain strengths – ball retention, short triangulated passing, attacking through swift transitions from defence – and it is these strengths Wenger is always seeking to feed. Diversifying into other kinds of strength would, in his opinion, be dilution not addition. To improve the current team is simply to try to do the same thing even better.

 

Not that this is anything new: the age of the all-purpose midfielder has been dawning for some time across Europe. Plus there is also variety even within Arsenal's repetitions. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain offers barrel-chested incision, Santi Cazorla will keep the ball tenderly, tiptoeing around in possession like a love-struck Chihuahua in a Disney cartoon spectacular, a single crumpled rose clutched between his teeth. Mesut Ozil can look like the most beautiful of ornate midfield follies. As for Lukas Podolski I have a theory there is some terrible misunderstanding in train here, that he hasn't actually mustered up the courage to "come out" as a striker at Arsenal, that he turned up at training and just sort of joined in with what everyone else was doing, like arriving in the office canteen on your first day at work and on a whim pretending to have a broad Mexican accent, and somehow finding yourself still doing it three years later.

 

For the neutral the most fascinating part is watching Wenger become more entrenched with age, more absolute in his hair shirt adherence to the basic tenets of Wengerball, that dream of football as a fluid, frictionless, thrillingly homogenised property, and stalking the touchline in his quilted floor-length gown with an expression of fond, tolerant disapproval. He doesn't even really seem to say much any more, just opens his mouth and allows gobbets of fully formed Wenger-speak to come out as he nods and smiles and seems to be enjoying at one remove the absolute Wengerism of his own performance. A journalist in Australia told me Wenger went to South Africa not long ago and was asked, among other things, how he'd fancy managing Fifa's world XI for the year. Wenger paused and frowned and scratched his chin and eventually said "Well, it would be hard to balance the books."

 

Draxler or no Draxler there there is a self-propelling majesty to Wenger's refusal to bend. He might have given in, rushed out in his overcoat and come back looking flushed 20 minutes later with a parcel containing Demba Ba, Loïc Remy and a small angry dog .But he has instead remained pointedly steadfast. Arsenal may or may not win the league from here, but should they get there it would be a peculiarly absorbing kind of triumph for English football's own zealot of the mobile midfield.

Debt and equity are both types of finance with different rights attached to each.

 

If you consider Ashley and the club as two separate entities, and the club owes Ashley money. As he owns 100% of the club (ie. no minority interest) by cancelling the debt he doesn't lose the money owed to him, because the liabilities of the club are decreased when the debt is cancelled (thereby increasing the equity value of the club which is calculated as assets less liabilities).

 

It's just moving money from one pocket to the other basically.

 

Debt to equity can be convertible bonds and stuff like that as well, though - so instead of someone paying you back, you get increased ownership of them[/sorry if this comes across as prontonising]

Steve Geoghegan is one of almost 100,000 people to have walked away from grassroots football since April 2012. His reason is hopefully unique. "I ran on to a pitch to stop an assault on one of my players," Geoghegan explains. "I stood in the way of an opposition player who gave me and my wife a mouthful of abuse. Others joined in. One lad came over to me and said: 'I've just phoned my brother and he and his mates are going to come down here and shoot you.' I called my team off the pitch. I couldn't take that lightly after what had happened to my team."

 

His team were the now disbanded Fir Tree, the junior football club that 11-year-old Rhys Jones played for and had just finished training with when he was shot dead in Liverpool in August 2007. Geoghegan was the coach who offered Rhys a lift home that summer's evening and moments later witnessed the schoolboy, who decided to walk, fall to the ground and become a victim to gang culture.

 

Talent spotted on the football pitches of Merseyside will play a major role for England at this summer's World Cup. Captain Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and his successor as Everton and England's next great hope, Ross Barkley, may all be integral to Roy Hodgson's prospects in Brazil and in shaping the national mood. The production line on Merseyside is performing above the statistical norm, while its two historic top-flight clubs pursue Champions League football and the £40m qualification offers.

Down at grassroots level, however, the outlook on Merseyside and throughout the country is bleak. "The next Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard or Gareth Bale are going to be sitting at home because their parents can't afford to send them to football," says Kenny Saunders of Woolton FC. "We have to change that but it's hard and it's getting harder."

 

Nationally, there has been a 9% decrease in the number of 16-year-olds and over playing football at least once a week in eight years, according to Sport England. There are myriad reasons – lifestyle changes, the recession, houses standing where pitches used to be – and many projects, plus thousands of dedicated people, attempting to combat the problem. One is Mick Baikie, the national clubs services manager at the Football Association and also coach of his local junior team, Lichfield City.

 

"There has been an increase in participation between under-sevens to under-10s and in boys' youth football, although a levelling off in girls' youth football," counters Baikie, who oversees the FA's charter standard programme for grassroots clubs.

 

"But one of the biggest challenges we face is facilities. We've got qualified coaches but we haven't got the facilities for them to coach and play. The big problem now is the public sector cuts – 80% of games are played on local authority sites that have been heavily subsidised in the past but we are starting to see an impact with the cuts. One council recently raised their fees from £400 per pitch, per season to £1,600. That's happening all over the country and it is a real challenge to get teams on to pitches.

 

"We now have a team of regional facility investment managers who work with local authorities to try and keep costs down and to look at different options. For example, can a club take over a lease on a pitch and, if so, how do we support them in doing that?"

 

It is 8.30am on a Saturday at Camp Hill, a park in south Liverpool, and Saunders is putting out the goals and cones for some of the 62 teams that comprise Woolton FC. He has been doing it unpaid for the past 19 years, 48 weeks a year and regardless of the weather. Today's weather is particularly grim. Several coaches have had to cancel training sessions after an early morning storm turned sections of the ground into a quagmire.

 

A four-year-old girl in a pristine Barcelona away kit, brought by her father on his way home from work, waits expectantly for a game. Many more defy the conditions and Camp Hill fills as the morning progresses, although not in time for the girl in the red and yellow Barcelona stripes, who trudges home through the mud, head down and holding dad's hand all the way. Still, it could have been worse. She might have wanted to use a toilet. There isn't one at Woolton FC, a club based in an affluent suburb but whose members come from varying backgrounds across Merseyside and beyond, increasingly so as league numbers dwindle.

 

"It's an embarrassment," says Saunders as he surveys matches from the facilities at Woolton FC, or rather, facility – a converted shipping container that has been the club's base since 1990. It contains goal frames, nets and a rack of small boots for children who cannot afford their own. There is also a tuck shop inside, run by pensioner Ailsa Robinson, who with her husband, Lance, has been a volunteer at the club for years – and, of course, the obligatory buckets under holes in the roof.

 

That is it, for 62 teams, and Woolton are an FA charter standard community club – the most advanced level of a programme that recognises and rewards clubs that, according to the FA website, "are well run, sustainable, which place child protection, quality coaching and safety paramount". Approximately 48,000 clubs are charter standard, 83% of teams in the under-sevens to under-18s range, and the scheme has played a major part in increasing the number of qualified coaches in the country, with the level one qualification a prerequisite.

 

"There has been a real drive at the FA to raise standards and 83% shows the success of the charter standard programme since it was introduced in 2002," Baikie says. "The programme started with clubs coming to us asking to be recognised for having quality at grassroots level and evolved from there. It was 40% in 2008, so that shows how far it has come in the last five years."

 

Yet Saunders insists the overall picture at this level has deteriorated. "I've been involved in grassroots football since I was 16. I'm now 50 and it is far worse now than it was 34 years ago, in terms of the numbers taking part, the cost and even facilities," he says. "There were more facilities and pitches when I started at 16. Leisure facilities are cut and cut and cut. We are OK at Camp Hill because it is a parks and garden but over the road [on Simpsons playing fields] there are two matches taking place at the moment when there should be 10. That will be because the pitches are waterlogged or people just haven't turned up. If participation continues to fall they will look to build on there. This is what's happening all over the country."

 

Saunders knows. In December 2012 he organised a protest attended by thousands on Buckley Hill playing fields following Sefton council's proposal to increase pitch fees for under-11s from £180 to £750 per season. The planned hike was dropped shortly afterwards. From there, he founded the Save Grassroots Football campaign that, with support from the Bolton North East MP, David Crausby, has an e-petition calling on the football authorities to give 7.5% of broadcasting income to the grassroots game.

 

At present the Premier League gives under 1% of total broadcasting rights proceeds via the Football Foundation, £12m a year, having initially bowed to government pressure to give 5%. The league insists that commitment was for one rights deal only and, despite securing a record £5.5bn for 2013-16, has cut its funding to the Football Foundation from £20m a year. In a letter to Saunders's local MP, the Premier League chief executive, Richard Scudamore, explained the reduction thus: "The decision of the last government and the FA to cut their contributions."

 

Scudamore added that the Premier League, in co-ordination with the FA, "take responsibility for the most substantial football solidarity programme in world football". That includes the Premier League Charitable Fund, which last year contributed £45m to the Kickz campaign, Premier League 4 Sport and the Creating Chances community projects.

 

Together with the FA and the government, the Premier League has now committed £102m towards improving grassroots facilities through the Premier League's and the FA's facilities fund, which will begin to accept applications from Monday. That sum is to be spread over three years but represents an overall reduction compared to what grassroots received when the government, FA and Premier League were each providing £20m per annum.

 

The Save Grassroots Football e-petition requires 100,000 signatures to prompt a debate in the Commons but has under 23,000 names, with one month remaining. It would have attracted more with the backing of the 50 county FAs that Saunders contacted about the campaign. Not one replied. "A radio station in Birmingham rang me before Christmas because Walsall council have proposed raising pitch fees from £380 to £1600," says Saunders, who will be holding a demonstration against price rises in Liverpool at Camp Hill on Sunday 26 January. "I've been told one of the leagues in Liverpool, who currently hire their pitches for £2,000 a year from the council, will have to pay £5,500 next year. There is a possibility of administration fees going up from £130 to £350 for every team. People just cannot afford it.

 

"Football is now the fourth most popular participation sport behind swimming, athletics and cycling. Over 180,000 people have walked away from grassroots football in the last seven to eight years. In Liverpool, there is one under-17s league. The under-15s and 14s leagues are starting to struggle. I was born and bred in Huyton, where Steven Gerrard, Peter Reid, Joey Barton and David Nugent are from. There isn't a junior league in Huyton at the moment, only an under-sevens mini-soccer league. People are now having to travelling out of their own boroughs, like Huyton, to play in Liverpool. That adds to the cost. I think anyone who is involved in grassroots football will have seen the deterioration year on year."

 

Surveys by Sport England show a drop in the number of people aged 16 and over who play football at least once a week – from 2,021,700 in the period October 2005 to October 2006, to 1,935,200 in April 2012 to April 2013 to 1,838,600 in October 2012 to October 2013.

 

"We don't look at the bigger picture in this country," says Saunders, whose campaign is directed at all bodies with a vested interest in the health of the game. That includes clubs who apply to the Football Foundation for money from the Premier League Community Facility Fund, to which the Premier League donates £6m a year, to assist their own community projects.

 

He explains: "We would like a committee drawn up from the Premier League, the FA, government and representatives of grassroots football and money dispersed from that. The transfer window is open now and every British player transferred would have been involved in grassroots football at some stage, so what about 1% of every transfer – agent fees included – going into a grassroots pool?

 

"If kids can play football regularly that will help in some way towards the obesity crisis and the strain that puts on the NHS. And it's not just about the football but about making friends, instilling discipline and helping the community. All we want here is for the kids and their parents to enjoy it and they do, there is a really good atmosphere around the club.

 

"Do I coach here to discover the next Wayne Rooney? Not really, no. That's not going to happen because scouts from Everton and Liverpool take our best players at five years of age. It's about time they gave us a contribution for taking those kids out of grassroots football and the pros put something back in."

 

Saunders is right; the spirit at Woolton FC is impressive, unlike the facilities, and far removed from the hostility that prompted Geoghegan to disband Fir Tree FC last year. The difficulties they both encounter are similar, however, and resonate across the country. Geoghegan outlines: "The biggest problems are the aggression in the game, and a lot of that stems from parents on the sidelines, the financial strain without the proper support of the football authorities and the lack of decent facilities. And those facilities are reducing. The Liverpool and District Sunday League once had 13 divisions, now it has three."

 

Remarkably, the threat to Geoghegan's life, and all that entailed for a friend of Rhys Jones and his family, was not the end for the Fir Tree manager. He was disillusioned with touchline abuse before the incident, with punitive fines not only for bookings and dismissals but for failing to register his team's scores on a league's website before 5pm on a Sunday. On one occasion he missed the deadline having taken his son to hospital with a serious leg injury suffered during a game. The fine applied.

 

"Suspend a player for misbehaviour rather than fine his club," he argues. "That is a more effective punishment than adding to the financial pressure on his club."

 

Geoghegan wanted to quit in the aftermath of the murder but was encouraged to continue by Rhys's parents, Stephen and Melanie. He stayed on and helped establish a charity "to promote safe environments for young people to play football and to get guns off the streets". The Rhys Jones Memorial Fund contributed to a community centre, with two 3G pitches, named after the 11-year-old but the annual football tournament in his memory, one that attracted over 500 children, is no more.

 

"It was fantastic at first," he recalls. "We had matches at Liverpool's and Everton's academies and then on to Chester City for the semi-finals and finals. People have short memories, though, and as time went on the backers started to pull out. When we last held the tournament at the Liverpool County FA headquarters the council charged me £350 for the pitches."

 

The final straw for Geoghegan arrived in the post a few week's after the violent threat. "I received a letter from the Liverpool County FA. It said I'd been fined £70 for getting the game abandoned and encroaching on the field of play," he recalls. A personal hearing followed, the fine for encroaching was increased to £250 then eventually rescinded completely but enough was enough. "Basically, I just couldn't afford to keep running the team and I wasn't prepared to stand on the line every week listening to the abuse that goes on," Geoghegan admits. Another one gone.

So much to envy about Cortese's (and Pocchetino's) reign at Southampton. As a fan of an immediate rival I hope it knackers them a bit, but as a neutral I hope this doesn't become yet another case of an entire club suffering due to the whims of another clueless owner.

Cortese did a lot of negative things in terms of behavior towards the fans though.
