People can go on about squad investment etc until the cow's come home, and if we're competing at the very upper echelons of the league, of course that becomes a very relevant consideration - but look at Villa's fucking squad, man. They're a competitive side that beat a CL team away from home on day one, now they're drawing at Stamford Bridge against Oscar, Mata, Hazard etc. Our team would shit our pants and try to keep it a 3-0 loss from the first whistle. Their learning curve last season was steep, no doubt about it - but that investment in time has seen them come out the other end as a genuine team. If players go off injured/are suspended/get their heads turned, it's not the end of their world.
