afar
This used to be my favourite thread on these boards. However nowadays it's seems kinda irrelevant.
number9shirt
Dosen't matter how much we spend or who we sign, the players are sold the club as a springboard to better things. the mind-set is all wrong before they ever pull on the shirt.
Village Idiot
Dosen't matter how much we spend or who we sign, the players are sold the club as a springboard to better things. the mind-set is all wrong before they ever pull on the shirt. Sevilla have been run like that for a decade, and they have a few trophies to show for it. It can be done, but it requires to reinvest the profits of sales decisively, and to reinvest them well. Frazzle
Southampton and Sevilla haven't been run like that though. Southampton, at least, have been run to succeed and do what they do to succeed. We do what we do to tread water. Teams like that and Porto especially have hundreds of worldwide scouts and have players bought or at least lined up before the current one leaves. We have about ten scouts and replace players 18 months later, the models are completely different. Edit- I see VI does allude to that with Sevilla actually
The College Dropout
Benfica too. Even Spurs. Sold but reinvested. We would've sold Bale for £25m 4 years ago.
La Parka
True, I'd imagine our scouting network is far far far behind many other clubs. And our youth development is farcical.

number9shirt
The previous clubs mentioned show this type of model can work (especially Porto who may well dump Bayern out of the champions league tonight). unfortunately we lack the aptitude on every level needed to pull it off. Interpolic
Think you mean 'S'hampton' Take the "out" out of Southampton and you get "S'hampton". Take the "out" out of "Ashley Out" and you get "Ashley". Coincidence?!

Scotty66
Ben, Kent, 5 years ago The fact is that £3 million would be a fair price. Spurs had their pants pulled down when they bought him and he's been as big a flop as it's possible to be. Shame he didn't say the same about Shola. Why not Elliott? Krul on only £28k a week? According to the reports in the papers today, we have the 7th highest wage bill. So who is earning all this money?
