Dost's all round game is a lot closer to that of Shola's than it is Giroud's.

Not talking about him in particular. I just feel whenever we are linked with a tall/target man the general feeling on the forum is one of disappointment. That it would make us a worse side to watch or something. 90% of good teams need someone that can hold it up. None of our strikers can do that. Shola could do that about 1 every 12 games but now we don't even have that. We have 1 poacher. A #10 playing as a striker. And a turd. If we keep Cisse we shouldn't get another poacher.

I'm more confident that with McLaren a big man up front wouldn't necessarily be a Pardew-esque nightmare but as a tactical plan it's really as English and old school as it gets.

Then why did Ronald Koeman buy a target man? Why did Wenger buy Giroud? Mourinho, Costa. City, Dzeko & Bony? Even Rooney and RVP are handy with their backs towards goal. Aguero too. Juve Morata & Llorente. Lewandowski. Zlatan. Kane. We have nobody, nothing. It's a major reason why our attacks are so poor. You need to get the ball into the box WITHOUT the striker helping you get it there.

It's less about being a target man and more about first touch and awareness. The list of players you mention there all possess these two traits, which enables the team to play off them.

Apparently during Derby's good periods McClaren played with a target man but played good football so I hope that continues. I don't think any team can consistently play good football if Papiss Cisse or simialr is the focal point of their attack.

well it depends - if he has to hold it for 45 sec like under pardew then no

This is what concerns me, while Austin and Dost are both 6ft+ strikers, there seems to be doubt as to their all round play according to those who have seen them, most of their goals are scored on the deck as opposed to through any real power in the air. It remains to be seen whether they actually bring any target man abilities to the team or are in fact just Cisse style poachers.

That would mean nothing if they were weak and couldn't fend off defenders.

They don't need to fend them off if the ball isn't lumped at them from 80 yards.

Am I now

So you're saying it's not possible to win football matches without the presence of a large striker, regardless of his other abilities?

Oh my goodness. Please don't say this kind of thing. I can't take it. I really can't take it!

Having watched Dost's highlights, I do love his enthusiasm. Loves scoring goals he does.

Both he and Austin look like penalty box specialists though, and so I am hoping we are planning on magicianing some creativity from somewhere.

Because having those players adds an extra dimension to their play, a plan b or whatever you want to call it. We have no plan a atm and whenever 'big bloke up top' is your primarily gamelan it's more often than not shit.

If McLaren also intends to develop all aspects of our game and bring in some actual wingers then no worries but it's unlikely we'll make this guy our first signing at a whopping 9m and then go on to do much more business so it'll probably be long balls launched from the back.

Of course you're clueless. You're asking me a silly question. It's easier to win football matches with footballers with all-round skill packages. Generally, having strikers with strength, the ability to fend off defenders and combine well with their team-mates - will do better. Whether that's Messi or Zlatan.

You've added in all this nonsense about "big bloke up top".  I don't think you need actual wingers if you have a target man. Swansea, S'hampton, Arsenal, City etc. have managed well with big players up top without wingers getting chalks on their boots swinging in cross after cross.

I dont care how tall the striker we buy is, it would be just nice to have one who can play with his back to goal and bring others into play.  We dont have anyone in our squad currently capable of doing that.

We don't have anyone capable of doing fucking anything in our squad, hence my concern or 'nonsense' that our first move is seemingly for a big bloke when we're literally the worst team in the league in terms of quality of our general play. It's possible that this guy will just make it all click and we'll become a lush footballing team using a big man with a great touch to perfect effect but somehow I doubt it seeing as he's probably not very good.
