Marmoset
Well that says a lot about how much he ignored their gaping hole in midfield for years. He played Park, Carrick and a 38 year-old Giggs at CM in a CL final FFS. Carrick is nowt special and would be the archetypal Man Utd gravytrain arsehole who steps out of the comfort zone and realises his body can't keep up in a s*** team. Aye, shite midfield, getting to the CL final and getting beat by one of the best teams in history and that Not that that midfield played every game like He's not the long term answer, but we need someone who can control games and for a least a year if he's injury free he's capable of that. There's zero logical relevance to how a transfer 11 years ago for a different player worked out to how this one would work out.
Alberts Mustache
Of course he is good enough. And he would provide some much needed experience
Guest n4e
Colback-carrick in midfield What's the problem? Two Geordie lads at the heart of the midfield, man. What more could you as for?
Ginola
Butt better than Carrick There's clearly nothing in it, but he would improve us considerably

I didn't just cite one player 11 years ago, I cited numerous over the course of the last decade. Man Utd's cast offs can fuck off. In fact, all old big club cast offs can fuck off (Duff, Geremi, Babayaro, Cacapa, Rush, Barnes etc). The one positive benefit of the Ashley dictatorship is not having to watch these kind of signings inevitably fail. Not even arsed if there's a chance Carrick could be decent for a season, I don't want him, and thankfully won't have to see it happen.
ponsaelius
Butt better than Carrick There's clearly nothing in it, but he would improve us considerably Would love to know whats massively different about the two of them. Both played nigh on 400 games for Man Utd somehow, both racked up similar number of England caps. Both carried by their vastly more talented teammates for years. Guest
You might as well compare Vidic with O'Shea too.
Marmoset
Loved that 2011 run where Carrick was carried by Gibson, Park, Fletcher, Anderson and an elderly Giggs and Scholes to a PL title and CL final. But tbf that was 4 years ago and midfield's not that important in CL and that. Also that bit where he passed the ball about well and got that Manchester team playing well, being widely regarded as a big part in their upturn in form, but that was a few months ago tbf. Wouldn't want someone like that being decent for a season. Especially cause Geremi was pants.
ponsaelius
Funny that cos I remember Park having a stormer against Chelsea in the quarters and Gibson, Anderson and Giggs tearing Schalke apart over two legs in the semis. Don't remember anything Carrick did. In fact, not sure I can remember him doing anything memorable ever.

ponsaelius
8 years ago, be canny if we could sign that version Almost impressive for somebody to play for Man Utd that long and do literally fuck all worth recalling. Even John O'Shea scored that chip against Arsenal.

If you can't remember spectacular goals, I'm not going to expect you to remember very good controlling-the-midfield performances, a week or a decade ago. ponsaelius
Actually, saying that, I do remember Carrick falling on his arse and handing the ball straight to Yaya Toure at Wembley. Best to give him his dues there. Controlling the midfield Man Utd have been shite since Scholes retired and they had to rely on Carrick being their best midfielder. They even brought him back out of retirement again in desperation.

Kanj
We don't need 34 year old Carrick. He's been over and under rated his entire career. Wish we had him eons ago but that ship has sailed.
STM
Butt better than Carrick. Carrick is one of the best passers England has had in years. If only the young players coming through had the same intelligence on the pitch. Sadly, he's too old now.
Cronky
Never quite been able to make my mind up about Carrick. I think the point made before - that playing for Man U and playing for us are different challenges - is very valid and the player might get found out. If it's true, it's an interesting departure from the usual policy of avoiding players at the end of their careers. That always needed a bit of flexibility. I wonder whether Carrick might fancy the move. It's a chance, at the end of his career, to play for his hometown club, and if he feels that we're about to make some progress, you can see the attraction. And with the arrival of Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger, his chances are going to be limited at Man U.
