The Managerial Merry Go Round™ - Silva leaves Fulham

Yea, but better teams also keep the ball "for the sake of it". It takes the sting out of teams like Newcastle at St. James'. They keep the ball to control it and defend with it: case in point, PSG yesterday.

There's a difference between taken the sting out of a game momentarily, and playing a style of football that is centred around very slow progression and passing the ball from side to side the majority of the time.

Yesterday Arsenal played like Wolves would in the Premier League. They sat back and completely ceded territory to PSG, which is why they had so much possession and recycled the ball so much.

When PSG played Bayern who didn't cede possession to them. They punished them in behind constantly and didn't play the same way.

Are you just cherry picking this season to justify your argument? Because let's face it, we've had a shit season.

Last season Newcastle were canny good and even the season before. You remember, when we won a trophy and were competing the absolute best in Europe?

So no Newcastle aren't shit at passing the ball, they were just shit THIS SEASON. I'll give you that sunshine, we were shit all over the pitch THIS SEASON.

We were much worse this season, but generally people have always complained about how well the team passes the ball and keeps the ball, particularly against teams that sit deeper and are better organised defensively.

The reason we struggle against iraolas bournemouth is because they play our style but are a better passing team than us and you can tell they work on it.

Better coached with the ball and actually have a style of attacking buildup play.

A lot like klopp actually he'll do well at Liverpool unfortunately.

I do believe liverpool tapped iraola up ages ago about being there manager with that edwards knowing him, that's the only reason alonso wasn't courted in my opinion.

It makes sense why they never tried for him before going to Chelsea.

Yes, and I cannot remember any successful team passing the ball side by side endlessly (at least in years). So keeping the ball doesn't have to mean that. "For the sake of it" means getting your shape right, having a breather and letting the opponent run for a while. Pep's City took our press out of the picture completely occasionally with this. Of course every team wants to score, but that doesn't mean they look for it all the time.

But keeping the ball also means trying to lure teams to press you. Brighton for example did this extremely well under De Zerbi.

And we need players who can handle press. Currently we have 1-2 midfielders who can, and maybe 1 centreback and 1-2 fullbacks who are able to play easily past the press.

PSG and Bayern were maybe most attacking tie I have ever seen in UCL.

PSG, Bayern and Flick's Barca all keep the ball well and pass it well too, and if there's an opportunity and space to exploit they play with more urgency in those moments to exploit it. I think this is the sort of football we'll see from Iraola at Liverpool.

Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool this past season all wanted to suffocate teams by trying to keep the ball all game, aiming to pin the opposition in their own box. Passing the ball side to side until they can just about walk the ball into the net. They regularly pass up the opportunities to play their forward players in behind even when there's a ton of grass for them to run into.

So just to be clear, that is the differentiation I'm making, when I refer to keeping possession for the sake of it.

If we see that kind if football, then Iraola has changed his game, which is fine by me

edit and you have to choose the moment to play it behind. There is no point to play Haaland behind in 1v3 situation or play the pass from too far out. Teams that have quality on the ball know this. And playing lot of throughballs means lots of turnovers. So they look for a better moment. Doesnt mean endless possession. Pep’s Barca and City few years ago did play endless sideways passes.

If Howe struggles by October I am pretty sure we will approach Poch.

I hope not on both counts. The minute he took the US job was the moment I felt his hunger had gone. I don't think he would come here for the right reasons or motivated enough.

To an extent we can't expect Eddies eventual replacement to be committed/community minded to the depth Eddie is but I think its a potential banana skin to go for guys based purely on name and having done something half decent previously in the prem. Maybe he would be great.

Don't get it with Poch, like. He's had one decent run with one side. Years ago. Been living off that ever since.

He's a fraud, I can't believe how much people talk him up. He dines out on his time with Spurs yet that was about 10 years ago and they ended up finishing 3rd the season Leicester won the league which was the best chance they'll ever get to win it. He also failed to win the league with PSG which should be impossible

Turning our nose up with poch now 😂

He got chelsea back in the champions league then got sacked,

Worked wonders with spurs and brought the youth through.

At southampton he was great especially as he was an unknown at the time.

He didnt, they finished 6th and qualified for the Conference League, but they did win their last 5 games of the season and he looked to have turned them around when he got the bullet.

You what? It's an opinion - and a general one at that. Absolutely fuck all to do with 'turning a nose up' and certainly not made with in the context of managing NUFC.

Not winning the league with PSG is almost a bigger achievement than winning it.

There's a lot to unpick here.

Oh, you mean one particular year they didn't win it, 2010/2011, the winners had those players?
