Chizzletooth
There's little to complain about at the moment, which makes the relentless anti Pardew bile more wearisome than ever to read. 30 points is an excellent return, considering how little investment was made in the summer. Yeah he's got his flaws but overall he's doing a very decent job. Really looking forward to the next game. Yet you come in and read it. Yeah well, masochism is a big part of being a Newcastle fan, as you well know.
BrettNUFC
I'm still baffled by one thing at the moment, why play for possession at Man Utd and at Palace (and do it so well). Yet give it up at home to Southampton. It makes no sense. I agree with this, especially when in his interview after the match where he said he chose the tactic of taking the possession. So clearly he picks and chooses his games in which he thinks it's best to play counter football or like yesterday control the tempo. I said after the Southampton game i felt he was largely responsible for us not getting 3 points but i wasn't going to criticise too much because i felt he hasn't done too much wrong this season and been excellent overall. It is a strange way to do it, we should look for possession in every game, and you're right he hasn't done too much wrong. Us getting pushed back too much when he doesn't react to the opposition would be one thing we need to look at. Virtually never coming from behind is another. My only angry moment was the 'lets win for Mike' comment. Just an unforgivable thing to say. But overall, the football is better (no matter the luck), the table doesn't lie. Beating Chelsea, Tottenham and Man Utd without letting any in, and with two of those games being away. You don't do that with just luck.
Cajun
It might be my imagination but I have a feeling he's developed a bit as a manager... He seems to learn, unfortunately when thing aren't broke (or fixed) he tries to change it (Ben Arfa). He is doing well at the moment so I can't knock him but I also can't hold out hope this will continue.
Guest Howaythetoon
You could clearly hear him throughout the game "keep it", "pass it", "get up." That I like!

Guest Howaythetoon
He actually looked annoyed at one point. I think it was a moment of play by Tiote who just aimed it long aimlessly, surrendering possession. Yesterday was arguably the best we have played all season in terms of controlling play, possession, working the opposition etc., made all the more pleasing because of the shitty conditions. There is no excuses now mind because we have shown we are capable of playing very good football and getting at the opposition. Pardew is also showing he is becoming capable of setting the team up to play this way. We need to maintain it all the way through the season.
Gallowgate Toon
But that's not assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the players. It's not as simple as saying, 'we should play this style all the time', because that doesn't necessarily suit our personnel when taking into account the opposition and their style, strengths and weaknesses. We've shown we can play possession football to frustrate teams away from home but we've not shown that it's something we can do when we need play through teams that look to shut space down, especially when they come to our place. I don't think we've got enough specialists in tight areas to really make it our proper philosophy. We've seen lots of teams come here over the last few years and look to give us the ball, frustrate and catch us on the break and we've often looked a bit clueless in terms of breaking those barriers down. We spend so much time worrying about the opposition that we don't have a style of play that we can call our own. The main reason we've often looked clueless is because we don't have a well known way of playing which the players know well enough and that's part of why we had a season like last. We tried to work on the weaknesses of the opposition instead of our own strengths. Our players are suited to playing the type of game we played against Man U and Palace and that's why it worked for us. The better teams have a style of play that they know and that suits the players they have, we need the same. They suited that style in those situations, that doesn't mean they can play like that in every game. Away games are naturally more open for us, you can't discount that when you look into how we should be playing. Manchester United have been the most successful domestic team in my lifetime, they've seldom had a defined style to me. In fact, I think the reason for their success has pretty much been that they've been a multi-faceted team that can adapt their strategy to different situations. I just don't look at these players and think they can play possession-based tiki-taka style stuff, it's just not what they're best at. We can go possession, at times, but it's not something we should exclusively be doing.
Guest firetotheworks
Man United was still the best performance for me. Man United were average and we beat them with possession football. Palace were just really, really s***.
Guest Haris Vuckic
Could Mick go through the 20 teams in the division and tell me the defined styles of play? I'm sure he could teach me a thing or two and I'm all ears.
Guest bimpy474
Possession football doesn't have to be the fucking Tika Taka Kitty Kat shit, sick of hearing that term. You can keep the ball without being Barcelona like.
