The other games today - 2014/15

Europa league is mint, knockout games are always mad. Plus gotta love the mix of random teams. Got yer old fallen giants, yer Eastern European moneybags and the odd outlier like Guingamp.

Spot on.

The Guardian podcast on Weds was spot on n all, paying it some actual respect - Dave Farrar was positively moist.

Far better than the same 11 out of 16 teams scared to lose in the cash cup.

Balotelli is in the wrong 9 times out of 10 but yesterday was that 1. Why is Jordan Henderson ahead of him in taking penalties? How many penalties has Henderson taken? IMO strikers should always have preference over anyone else when taking penalties unless there's a specialist elsewhere. Balotelli has a 90% success rate and is a striker and is in need of confidence from goals.

He should take em all when playing.

Spot on, which is why I'm pleased we're taking it seriously. Regardless of the fact our league campaign has been verging on disastrous, it's a good competition with plenty of quality teams in, and instead of the constantly marketed Champions League, it's the constantly criticised Europa League which has provided most of the entertainment in European action this season.

It really is. People who hate Europa League are the same people who are baffled by Euro expansion, or think teams like Senegal/Iran/Ecuador shouldn't be allowed at a World Cup because apparently they lower the quality

They are capitalist corporate America's wet dream. Forgetting the absolute worst games of the last WC was played between the so called top sides. Argentina-Holland was so bad, if you didn't know the teams, you'd have thought it's Nicaragua vs. Fiji .

Apparently Europa League sucks because it involves Eastern European trips. Yep, who wants a trip to somewhere with utterly gorgeous women, cheap as fuck beer, immense history and architecture.....Nah fuck that. Cunts are blinded by capitalism agenda and their sky-high towers and 10 euros Starbucks lattes.

It's a fantastic and entertaining cup and its format is pretty good too. It's great that many countries and teams get a chance to succeed in it, but I wouldn't put it past those UEFA Cunts to bow down to pressure of cash-clubs and capitalist pigs and ruin this romantic affair. poor Legia Warsaw are STILL banned form having home fans (4th game now) for daring to criticize UEFA. They'd piss the tie vs. Ajax next week (Very unlucky to lose last night) if it weren't...such a shame. Always want the team who'll host the final to have a run. Makes things interesting

Great post, GC.

Love the EC, me. Of all the trophies I'd want Newcastle to win, it's that one.

If Everton and Tottenham are serious about the CL, they need to be winning this trophy. You look back to the 90s/2000s and Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal either won or got to the final. They then went to have success in the CL in the following years. Success is addictive. The more you win, the more you want more.

I hope Spurs or Everton can win it but unfortunately I can see Villareal or Sevilla winning. La Liga are just too strong.

Dortmund and Juventus should be interesting, especially if Dortmund bring their CL form rather than their league form.

It's really the only tie which isn't highly predictable.

Aye, it should be a decent tie to be honest. Real shame it's on the same night as City v.s Barca.

I think Dortmund will manage to get through over the two legs. Priority for them is to get an away goal or two as the way their defence is looking at the moment, I'd be shocked if Juventus didn't manage to score against them in both games.

You're rather skirting round the single thing that most sucks about the Europa League format. "Pressure of cash-clubs" indeed.

Me too.

CRYSTAL Palace could be boosted by having striker Shola Ameobi available for tomorrow's clash with Arsenal.

The 33-year-old, who arrived on a free last month, has been improving his fitness and overcoming an ankle problem.

However, boss Alan Pardew hinted Ameobi could be on the substitutes' bench at the very least at Selhurst Park.

"I think he has got a chance for this game (with Arsenal)," said the manager.
